Sea of Love / Dagat ng Pag-ibig
Exhibition: 9 May – 22 Nov 2026
Thu 7 May 14:00
The Philippine Pavilion will be represented by artist and filmmaker Jon Cuyson in a show titled Jon Cuyson: Sea of Love / Dagat ng Pag-ibig, the exhibition sees the ocean as a space of movement and connection, rather than a barrier, and explores themes of labour, gender and time in the context of global flow of commodities and people, featuring works revolving around Filipino seafarers and their oft-neglected participation in global commerce. Over the past two decades, Cuyson’s practice has spanned painting, sculpture, bookmaking and film in works that work at the intersection between identity and ecology, blending fact and fiction. Recently he developed what he calls ‘Mussel Thinking’, a framework that takes inspiration from the mollusc to see the world through processes of ‘filtration, sedimentation, and clustering’. Mara Gladstone, whose proposal was picked from a pool of open-call submissions, will curate.
