Şule Gazioğlu Gallery will present photographer Ci Demi’s series “Something Is Amiss” in the Discovery section of Photo London 2026, taking place from May 14–17, 2026. Held at Olympia London, the fair continues to be one of the leading platforms bringing together diverse approaches to contemporary photography. This year, Şule Gazioğlu Gallery introduces a compelling narrative focused on everyday life in major cities.
Ci Demi’s “Something Is Amiss” series, shaped through years of exploring the psychogeography of Istanbul through photography, text, and publishing, stands out as a continuation of the artist’s evolving visual language, now rendered with greater intensity. The series takes color as its point of departure. Images created using flash in daylight subtly shift everyday scenes from their familiar contexts, producing an effect that feels both intimate and distant. While evoking a quiet sense of the past, this approach also makes the uninterrupted flow of time perceptible. (Image: Ci Demi, Il Giornale, 2021)
Each photograph can be read as an attempt to momentarily pause the flow of a crowded and constantly moving city. A frequently crossed bridge, reframed in a simplified composition, or the careful observation of a solitary figure sitting by the sea, offers a renewed perspective on daily life in Istanbul. At the heart of the series lies an open-ended question: “What is missing, what might be out of place?” In Ci Demi’s practice, this question does not seek a definitive answer but instead aims to render visible the invisible pressures shaped by the contemporary city and the times we inhabit. While pointing to both the mesmerizing and heavy realities of living in Istanbul, the artist addresses, through a personal lens, the impact of accumulated political, social, and emotional tensions on the individual. In this context, seemingly ordinary moments transform into scenes that carry traces of a suppressed unease.
As the artist notes, the juxtaposition of lifeless crowds with objects uniquely alive to the city intensifies this feeling: a sense that something in Istanbul has indeed shifted out of place. Comprising photographs produced between 2019 and 2026, “Something Is Amiss” explores the possibilities of looking closely at the city and reinterpreting it.
The artist has gained international recognition after receiving the Narrativa Award in the emerging talents category—one of the respected contemporary awards in photography—highlighting their distinctive visual storytelling and psychogeographic approach. At Photo London 2026, Şule Gazioğlu Gallery’s presentation invites viewers to reconsider the rhythm, memory, and transformation of the city through familiar urban imagery, offering a renewed way of seeing. The exhibition can be visited at Booth J27-12
