The show explores the controversial relationship between humanity and water: the most precious liquid, the primary source of life, an essential part of our bodies, our planet, and our way of living.
Between 2009 and 2014, Edward Burtynsky traveled across all five continents — from the Gulf of Mexico to the Ganges riverbanks — to capture the life cycle of water. He followed the course of rivers and studied the seas, exploring the many uses of water, from agriculture to religion, never stopping at the surface of things, in keeping with his distinctive style.
Burtynsky has used advanced technologies, essential for capturing the immensity of the subject. Aerial shots — from helicopters and drones — characterize the entire project, confronting us with the elusive scale of the visuals and the abstraction of the subjects. The result is always striking, never boring, since one is first fascinated by the marvelous depiction of places, and only after can go beyond the illusion of beauty toward an awareness of their shocking reality.
His art is necessary for provoking, informing and involving beyond national boundaries, since the environment is a global topic like nothing else and as urgent as our most fundamental needs.
The artist offers amazing images which actually make an impact, since they portray us, the human beings who shape the world according to the logic of greed, showing that the Earth is exhausted and utters a cry for help, also through the art of photography.
