What makes a photograph “real”? What is it made of? Today, we encounter photographs predominantly in the form of digital media. It is easy to lose sight of the fact that the history of photography is, in essence, a history of materials, craft techniques and tangible objects. “Echt Foto! Photography between Paper and Pixel” brings this knowledge back into focus, making it accessible and tangible once again. The exhibition brings together works from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century from the Kunstbibliothek and other collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, alongside numerous contemporary positions. It offers a new perspective on photography between the analogue object and the digital image – and on questions of authenticity, originality and durability that have taken on new urgency in the age of AI.
