Traces give rise to stories: an unusual cinema, a flower picture created by a machine, a bird's egg in a drawer. They tell of what disappears – and of what remains. “No applause. No life. No pain.” unfolds a panorama of change: the extinction of species, the erosion of shared cultural spaces, and the transformation of our perception in the age of generative AI. In her films, installations, and AI-based works, Claudia Larcher connects ecological questions with reflections on the future of cinema and image production.

About collecting
The focus is on three groups of works: Extinction Story , Still Life 3000 , and The End . They work with archives, collections, and datasets, and focus on those (power) apparatuses that shape our perceptions of the world – from private collections to cinema and artificial intelligence.

What kind of future do we envision?
The title line, “No applause. No life. No pain.”, comes from The End and, with dry humor, describes a very human longing: the desire for attention, recognition, and a lasting mark on the world. At the same time, the exhibition asks what happens when we let go of this logic of always wanting more and always wanting to be visible. Between species extinction, image production, and the promises of new technologies, it opens up a space where optimization and control are not the focus, but rather the possibility of rethinking the future, technology, and coexistence.

Aus Spuren entstehen Geschichten: ein ungewöhnlicher Kinosaal, ein Blumenbild, das von einer Maschine erzeugt wurde, ein Vogelei in einer Schublade. Sie erzählen von dem, was verschwindet – und von dem, was bleibt.

„No applause. No life. No pain.“ entfaltet ein Panorama des Wandels: des Aussterbens von Arten, des Schwindens gemeinsamer Kulturräume und der Veränderung unserer Wahrnehmung im Zeitalter generativer KI. In ihren Filmen, Installationen und KI-basierten Arbeiten verbindet Claudia Larcher ökologische Fragen mit Überlegungen zur Zukunft des Kinos und der Bildproduktion.

Über das Sammeln
Im Zentrum stehen drei Werkgruppen: Extinction Story, Still Life 3000 und The End. Sie arbeiten mit Archiven, Sammlungen und Datensätzen und richten den Blick auf jene (Macht-)Apparate, die unsere Vorstellungen der Welt prägen – von der privaten Sammlung über das Kino hin zur künstlichen Intelligenz.

Welche Zukunft stellen wir uns vor?
Die titelgebende Zeile „No applause. No life. No pain.“ stammt aus The End und beschreibt mit trockenem Humor eine sehr menschliche Sehnsucht: den Wunsch nach Aufmerksamkeit, Anerkennung und einem bleibenden Abdruck in der Welt. Zugleich fragt die Ausstellung, was geschieht, wenn wir diese Logik des Immer-mehr und Immer-sichtbar-sein-Wollens loslassen. Zwischen Artensterben, Bildproduktion und den Versprechen neuer Technologien eröffnet sie einen Raum, in dem nicht Optimierung und Kontrolle im Vordergrund stehen, sondern die Möglichkeit, Zukunft, Technologie und Zusammenleben anders zu denken.
