Studio 35 Minutes is pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring Daido Moriyama and Anders Petersen. The exhibition will be presented in two parts: AD (Anders + Daido) in the first half, and MP (Moriyama + Petersen) in the second. All works will be replaced between the two periods, with eight photographs by each artist, sixteen works in total, exhibited and available for purchase during each period.

Daido Moriyama was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1938, and Anders Petersen was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1944. In 1968, when Moriyama published Nippon Gekijo Shashincho (Photo Album of Japanese Theater) and was developing his distinctive style, Petersen was photographing the people and atmosphere of Café Lehmitz, a bar in Hamburg, Germany, which would later become the subject of his best-known work.

What the two photographers share is an approach rooted in personal, monochrome snapshots. Their work is intuitive as well as physical. Responding spontaneously to the world through the camera, they create images that leave a powerful impression on the viewer and have had a profound influence on subsequent generations of photographers.

In 2025, Studio 35 Minutes presented Petersen’s Café Lehmitz. The exhibition became an opportunity for my relationship with Anders to deepen. I believe the spark for the present exhibition came from a conversation during a visit to his studio in Stockholm, Sweden. He asked me, “What has Daido been doing lately?” Since I did not know Moriyama personally, I showed him a recent portrait of Moriyama that I had seen on Instagram and said, “Looks like his hair has turned white.” Anders laughed and replied, “He definitely looks better like this.”

Japan in the Far East and Sweden in the Far North. Though separated by great distances, the two photographers have continued to pursue their work at full speed through the same era. They are able to connect through photography, beyond words and national borders. I was drawn to this relationship and began to imagine bringing their work together in the intimate space of Studio 35 Minutes. Rather than simply juxtaposing their photographs, this exhibition explores how their images resonate and echo one another within the same space. Born in the twentieth century, an era often regarded as a golden age of photography, these two masters each forged their own distinctive paths. We invite you to experience this encounter between two bodies of remarkable work.
