To mark the bicentenary of photography, Paris Photo presents a path through two centuries of photography, featuring one work from each decade. Bringing together works from different periods and contexts, this selection draws connections without seeking to offer an exhaustive history of the medium. It invites visitors to view historical works in light of contemporary practices and to discover the many forms photography has taken since its invention.

Across the fair’s galleries, these encounters reveal continuities and transformations between works produced in widely differing contexts.

Photography emerges in all the diversity of its visual languages and uses, with forms and definitions that continue to evolve alongside the ways we see and represent the world.

From the early experiments of Louis Daguerre and William Henry Fox Talbot to the experimental works of Thomas Ruff and Yumo Wu’s images combining analogue photographic processes with artificial intelligence, the path reveals a continuous process of invention and transformation in image-making. These early photographic experiments thus appear less as part of a closed chapter in history than as the

beginnings of an ongoing story, in which certain questions are continually revisited and reimagined.

“The Bicentenary is not only a moment to look back at the history of photography, but also to consider the transformations of the medium.”
