Susa Templin is a photographer who works with an analog medium-format camera from the 1930s, emphasizing a slow, deliberate approach to image-making. Her process involves both capturing and developing photographs manually in a darkroom, reinforcing the tactile, sensory experience of her art. Her subjects are often architectural elements—windows, doors, staircases, and urban structures—which she reinterprets through multiple exposures and spatial layering.
Her approach emphasizes the material and conceptual foundations of photography—light, time, space, and composition—while questioning its documentary nature. By using analog techniques like double exposure, she superimposes fragments of architectural elements, deconstructing and reassembling them into abstract compositions. This process mirrors memory, where spaces blend and shift in perception.
"For Susa Templin, every work begins with the desire to tell a story. In her new series, that story is Berlin’s: a city both rough and captivating, which she has watched change over the decades. Medium-format analogue camera in hand, the artist walked the city in the footsteps of her own memories, using rolls of film whose colours she let time alter". Camille Merklen
