Ricco/Maresca Gallery is pleased to announce BIRTH, an exhibition of large format visualizations by Alexander Tsiaras. This remarkable body of work is Tsiaras's transformation of imagery derived from his latest book "From Conception to Birth: A Life Unfolds" (Doubleday, 2002), which visualizes human development from single cell to newborn from within the mother and the embryo.  These pictures literally show life within life: mother and child, before, during and after the moment of BIRTH, beautiful not only for their subject matter but also in the way they have been visualized by the artist. Visualizations are images which are the product of special software created by Tsiaras’ company, Anatomical Travelogues Inc. Each has been digitally output onto archival paper.  Tsiaras has developed the unique means of processing data from various kinds of medical scanning such as MRI to produce dimensional renderings of human anatomy, including fetal development. The visualizations in the BIRTH exhibition are in black and white and in color.  The artist renders the moment of birth in various ways from crisp, graphic, line drawing-like images of skeletal structures to soft tissue abstractions which look like Color Field paintings.
