Jeremy Blake is an american artist born in 1971. He started being known in the 90s with his "time-based paintings", computer-generated animations that transformed his static compositions in vibrant, psicodelic meditations, finding an equilibrium between painting and video. Though he has been named as digital artist, Blake keeps on identifying himself as a painter and there is no doubt his work is all about painting. The artist makes not only computer animated videos, but also drawings, traditional paintings and large scale c-prints. There is a subtile directive in the whole Blake’s work, expressed in the equilibrium between formal abstraction and a kind of stylized realism. Recognizable, hallucinatory and saturated of color shapes, give place to architectonic geometries. Blake uses abstraction to extend the range of interpretation of his work, always avoiding to reach the edge of non-sense. According to Blake, then, abstraction must not become a basic formal style, but the visual demonstration of philosophical nuance. Blake works have been exhibited in museums and galleries worlwide and it’s represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Reina Sofia, among others.
