The Schaulager exhibition features some seventy pictures and thus offers the first opportunity to appreciate the full range and diversity of the Canadian artist’s work over the last 25 years. Jeff Wall (born 1946) has been making photographs since 1967. He first created his large-format colour transparencies in 1978; for the past ten years, he has also been making black and white photographs on paper. A feature of Jeff Wall’s photographs is that they are neither part of series they composed as groups of works. Each picture is an individual composition in its own right. Some of these pictures have become icons of contemporary photography, yet many others are little known. The exhibition shows how, apart from the technical and thematic innovations, a new pictorial concept has gradually taken shape in this œuvre. Echoing Baudelaire, Jeff Wall long ago referred to this pictorial concept as the “painting of modern life”, but evolving a hundred years later under quite different conditions and using the language of photography. _______________________________ Die Ausstellung im Schaulager umfasst etwa siebzig Bilder und bietet damit zum ersten Mal die Möglichkeit, das langjährige Schaffen von Jeff Wall in seiner ganzen Breite und Eigenart zu erleben. Der kanadische Künstler Jeff Wall (geb. 1946) macht seit 1967 Fotografien. Ab 1978 sind es durchgehend grossformatige Bilder, farbige in Form von Leuchtkästen, und seit bald zehn Jahren auch Schwarzweissfotografien auf Papier. Eine Besonderheit der Fotografien von Jeff Wall ist, dass sie nicht in Serien oder als Werkgruppen entstehen, sondern dass jedes Bild eine einmalige Komposition darstellt, die für sich steht. Einige dieser Bilder sind zu Ikonen der zeitgenössischen Fotografie geworden, viele andere dagegen sind wenig bekannt. Die Ausstellung zeigt, wie in diesem Werk über die Jahre hinweg – jenseits der technischen und thematischen Innovationen – ein neues Bildkonzept Form angenommen hat, das Jeff Wall selber in Anspielung auf Baudelaire schon früh einmal als „Malerei des modernen Lebens“ bezeichnet hat. Ein Bildkonzept allerdings, das hundert Jahre später unter völlig anderen Bedingungen und mit der Sprache der Fotografie entwickelt wird.
