"The photographs of Nick Brandt are both beautiful and haunting. They come upon you in a flush of abundance that it is almost hard to recover from. . . . You are about to enter a world of the imagination, where all the animals are real, both fragile and full of grace." --from the foreword of "On this Earth" by Alice Sebold Nick Brandt depicts the animals of East Africa with an intimacy and artistry unmatched by other photographers who choose wildlife as their subject. His work goes far beyond the documentary realm of wildlife photographs. They portray a world of drama and poignancy, where the very souls of the animals seem to be revealed to us. Brandt creates these majestic photos—whether of moments of quintessential stillness or bursts of dramatic action—by engaging with these animals on an exceptionally intimate level, without the customary use of a telephoto lens. Evocative of classical art, Brandt artfully and simply captures animals in their natural state of being. Nick Brandt has exhibited his photographs in solo shows around the world, including in London, Berlin, Hamburg, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and New York. Born and raised in England, he now lives in Topanga Canyon, California, with his wife and menagerie of adopted animals.
