Tacita Dean Analogue: Films, Photographs, Drawings 1991–2006 Francis Alÿs The Sign Painting Project (1993-97): a Revision The fourth exhibition in Schaulager is dedicated to the work of the English artist Tacita Dean (b. 1965 in Canterbury, lives in Berlin) and that of the Belgian artist Francis Alÿs (b. 1959 in Antwerp, lives in Mexico City). With twenty film installations and numerous photographic works and large-format drawings, "Analogue" is the most extensive presentation of Dean's work thus far. The "Sign Painting Project" by Francis Alÿs is in this selection of some sixty paintings and numerous sketches the first comprehensive presentation of it. Over the last fifteen years, Tacita Dean has created a body of work that attracts ever more attention as time passes for its unconventional use of film and its unruly beauty. The particular quality of her work results from Dean’s unusual approach to the medium of film, which takes literally its central features – above all its analogue constitution and the importance of light in creating meaning – and exploits them for her cinematic language. Her films are the most prominent and striking aspect of Dean’s oeuvre, but film, drawing, and narrative are all closely connected in her work. The unusual form of the structure of her work is mirrored in the conception and arrangement of the exhibition in order to connect cinematic, sketched, and photographic images. The "Sign Painting Project" of Francis Alÿs is a reconstruction of a single, multipartite project from the 1990s that was produced in collaboration with professional sign painters from Mexico City – namely the rotulistas Emilio Rivera, Enrique Huerta and Juan Garcia. The publication Analogue. Drawings, 1991-2006, the first systematic collection of Dean's drawings will be published on the occasion of the exhibition in Schaulager. This publication contains an essay by Theodora Vischer, in which the connection between drawing and the films is revealed through numerous examples. The publication on the Sign Painting Project will appear at a later date. _______ deutsch _______ Die vierte Ausstellung im Schaulager widmet sich dem Schaffen der englischen Künstlerin Tacita Dean (geb. 1965 in Canterbury, lebt in Berlin) und des Belgiers Francis Alÿs (geb. 1959 in Antwerpen, lebt in Mexiko City). Von Tacita Dean wird mit 20 Filminstallationen sowie zahlreichen fotografischen Arbeiten und grossformatigen Zeichnungen die bisher umfangreichste Präsentation ihres Schaffens zu sehen sein. Das «Sign Painting Project» von Francis Alÿs wird mit ca. 60 Bildern sowie Skizzen und Zeichnungen erstmals umfassend vorgestellt. Tacita Dean hat in den letzten fünfzehn Jahren ein Werk geschaffen, das in seinem eigenwilligen Umgang mit Film und Zeichnungen und in seiner widerborstigen Schönheit je länger je mehr Aufsehen erregt. Die besondere Qualität dieses Werks ergibt sich aus dem ungewohnten Umgang Deans mit dem Medium Film, dessen zentrale Eigenschaften Tacita Dean beim Wort nimmt – allen voran seine analoge Verfasstheit und die bildtragende Bedeutung von Licht - und für ihre eigene Filmsprache nutzt. Die filmischen Arbeiten sind der prominenteste und auffälligste Teil des Werkes von Dean, jedoch sind Filmen, Zeichnen und Erzählen in ihrem Schafffen eng miteinander verbunden. Die in der Form ungewöhnliche Werkstruktur spiegelt sich in der Konzeption und Einrichtung der Ausstellung wieder, indem die Verbindung von filmischen, gezeichneten und fotografischen Bildern präsentiert wird. Mit dem «Sign Painting Project» von Francis Alÿs wird ein einzelnes, vielteiliges Projekt aus den neunziger Jahren rekonstruiert, das in Zusammenarbeit mit professionellen Malern von Reklametafeln aus Mexiko City entstanden ist, namentlich den Rotulistas Emilio Rivera, Enrique Huerta and Juan Garcia. Zur Ausstellung erscheint «Analogue. Zeichnungen 1996 – 2001» eine Publikation des zeichnerischen Schaffens von Tacita Dean mit einem Essay von Theodora Vischer, in dem an vielen Beispielen der Zusammenhang zwischen Zeichnen und Filmen aufgezeigt wird. Mit dieser Publikation wird erstmals systematisch auch das zeichnerische Schaffen von Dean publiziert. Die Publikation über das «Sign Painting Project» wird zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt erscheinen.
