F. C. Gundlach kuratiert anläßlich seines 80. Geburtstags unter dem Titel «The Heartbeat of Fashion» erstmals selbst aus seiner Sammlung eine Ausstellung für das Haus der Photographie in Hamburg. In „The Heartbeat of Fashion“ werden mehr als 370 Arbeiten von rund 100 Künstlern vom 27. September 2006 bis 7. Januar 2007 zu sehen sein. "Die Intention der Ausstellung ist, darzustellen, dass Moden in ihrer Zeitbezogenheit ein integraler und substanzieller Bestandteil unser aller Leben sind", so F. C. Gundlach. Diese zweite Präsentation der Sammlung wird die sich verändernde Zeitzeugenschaft des Mediums Fotografie sichtbar machen. Dabei legt sie einen Akzent auf die Mode und den sich wandelnden Blick auf den Menschen. Präsentiert wird eine subjektive Geschichte der Fotografie aus der Hand des Sammlers, in welcher alle Gattungen von der Modefotografie zur Genrefotografie, dem politischen Portrait und der künstlerischen Fotografie zu einem faszinierenden Panorama des wichtigsten bildnerischen Mediums des Industriezeitalters zusammenfinden. Die Ausstellung "The Heartbeat of Fashion" zeigt Fotografien aus dem Zeitraum von 1847 bis ins Jahr 2006, u.a. mit Arbeiten der Künstler Hill und Adamson, Madame d'Ora, George Hoyningen-Huene, Yva, Regina Relang, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Guy Bourdin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herlinde Koelbl und Peter Lindbergh. Sie soll vor allem sowohl das Sammlungskonzept, als auch in exemplarischen Beispielen – nicht unbedingt chronologisch – die Geschichte der Modephotographie im weitesten Sinn widerspiegeln. Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Katalogbuch im Kerber Verlag, Bielefeld mit ca. 350 Abb. auf 240 Seiten im Format 31 x 24 cm. Gundlach Collection "The Image of Men in Photography" will be presented, this time from the point of view of the collector himself. The tentative working title is "The Heartbeat of Fashion." This second presentation from the collection makes visible the changing character of the medium photography as a contemporary witness of time. It lays accent on fashion and the shifting perception of the photographed. A main focus is therefore represented by photographs that reflect the image of the person in the medium of their outer appearance – thus of their fashions and modes, their poses, their facial expressions and movements, their gestures. The definition of fashion underlying the collection as the spirit of the age concurrently demands a consideration of those photographs too that are not to be interpreted as fashion photographs in the narrow sense, but that reflect the contemporary witnessing of time. The exhibition "The Heartbeat of Fashion" shows photographs of the period from 1860 up into the year 2006 with, among others, works by the artists Hill and Adamson, Madame d'Ora, George Hoyningen-Huene, Yva, Regina Relang, Diane Arbus, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Guy Bourdin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herlinde Koelble, Petere Lindbergh. Above all it is supposed to reflect the concept behind the collection as well as showcase examples – not necessarily chronologically – of the history of fashion photography in the widest sense. Catalog The first major catalog covering the F. C. Gundlach Collection, which has been held since 2003 by the newly conceived Haus der Photographie in the Deichtorhallen, will be presented by high-grade 4c illustrations, mainly as full-page reproductions and covering all the exhibits. Essays by Boris von Brauchitsch on the fashion photography of George Hoyningen-Huene, and by Peter V. Brinkemper on the "vestment-based" discourse on modern fashion photography round out the catalog, elaborately designed by Harald Richter. F. C. Gundlach offers a comprehensive introduction to the exhibition concept, and Ingo Taubhorn concludes with an amusing text collage on fashion photography in-between the art business and commercial commitment. The hard-cover English-language catalog will be brought out by Kerber Verlag, Bielefeld/Leipzig and has 312 pages. A German-language edition will appear at the same time.
