walter storms galerie is proud to present its third exhibition dedicated exclusively to the work of Roland Fischer. His most recent photographs depict skyscraper façades in Brazil, the US and China and will be shown along with his latest set of works, Alhambra. This series was inspired by pictures of the Granada Alhambra taken by the famous pioneers of photography in the 19^th century, which are now located at the Fondo Fotografico Achive of the University of Navarra in Pamplona. Fischer had been invited to the archive to work with and research the collection. Some of these early photographs reappear in digitalized form in his current works. Today, nothing inside the ancient fortress walls reminds us of the age of romanticism when the first photographers were searching the ruins for motifs. The harem ladies hiding behind the ornamented windows of their rooms have disappeared forever, having yielded their space to the representatives of the modern tourist industry of which the Alhambra is undoubtedly a part. Roland Fischer's complexly arranged photographic works visually expel these modern realities, thus restoring the monuments' silent forms. Being themselves exempt from temporality, they insist on the immateriality of location. Roland Fischer (* 1958) is one of the most renowned German photographers of our time. Unlike many of his peers, he lives and works in Munich and not in Düsseldorf. In 1987, Fischer's portraits of nuns and monks brought him instant fame. His subsequent major works include the Los Angeles portraits, the cathedrals, the collective portraits, and the skyscraper façades. In 2003, the museum of contemporary art Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich dedicated an extensive retrospective to Fischer's complete works. This was followed by a project-oriented tour of exhibitions through Spain in 2004.

In ihrer dritten Einzelausstellung von Roland Fischer zeigt die walter storms galerie jüngste Motive aus der Serie der Hochhausfassaden aus Brasilien, den USA und China zusammen mit der neuesten Werkgruppe Alhambra. Frühe Fotografien der Alhambra in Granada aus dem Archiv Fondo Fotografico der Universität von Navarra in Pamplona, aufgenommen von bekannten Fotopionieren des 19. Jahrhunderts, waren der Ausgangspunkt für Roland Fischer, als er eingeladen wurde, sich mit dieser außergewöhnlichen Sammlung auseinanderzusetzen. Einige dieser frühen Aufnahmen tauchen in digitalisierter Form in den aktuellen Arbeiten Fischers wieder auf. Heute erinnert innerhalb der alten Festungsmauern nichts mehr an die Zeit der Romantik, als erste Fotografen zwischen den Ruinen nach Motiven suchten. Die Geister der Haremsfrauen, die sich hinter den ornamentierten Fenstern ihrer Gemächer versteckten, sind für immer verschwunden. Ihren Platz nehmen heute die Vertreter der modernen Tourismusindustrie ein, zu der die Alhambra inzwischen unzweifelhaft gehört. Roland Fischers mehrschichtig aufgebaute Fotoarbeiten blenden diese moderne Realität aus und geben so den Monumenten ihre stille Form zurück. Sie betonen die Immaterialität des Ortes und sind losgelöst von Zeitlichkeit. Roland Fischer, geb. 1958, ist einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Fotokünstler, der nicht in Düsseldorf sondern in München lebt und arbeitet. 1987 mit seinen Portraits von Nonnen und Mönchen schlagartig berühmt. Mit den Los Angeles Portraits, den Kathedralen und Kollektivportraits sowie den Hochhausfassaden folgten weitere große Werkkomplexe. 2003 zeigte die Pinakothek der Moderne in München Fischers Gesamtwerk in einer umfangreichen Retrospektive, im folgenden Jahr schloss sich eine projektbezogene Ausstellungstournee durch mehrere spanische Museen an.
