Sale 254 "Photographs" on May 11th, 2007 (Viewing: Mai 4th – 10th) Fascinating contemporaries at VAN HAM During the upcoming spring photography auction at VAN HAM Fine Art Auctions in Cologne on the 11th of May, around 450 photographs of nationally and internationally renowned artists will be presented. The wide spectrum of the auction includes sought-after works from contemporary photographers, classic photography from the 1920s to 1950s as well as rare works from the beginning of the 20th century and from the early stages of photography. The May auction excels with an exquisite sequence of different valuable prints by the 1910/20s photographer Heinrich Kühn (Lot 197-203, Estimate 3.000-6.000€). Apart from impressive portraits, a sensitive still life will also be proffered (Lot 199, Estimate 6.000€). Remarkable amongst the photographs of the 19th century is the daguerreotype from 1845/46, which depicts the railway viaduct of Bunzlau (Lot 340, Estimate 1.200€). This work can presumably be ascribed to the Bunzlau daguerreotypist Eduard Scholz. Another focal point in the upcoming spring auction is the original prints of the 1920s -1940s. Two studies of African sculptures by the photographer Germaine Krull from Paris are each estimated at 1.200€ (Lot. 195 &195). August Sander is represented with a series of his typical portrait studies of families from the Westerwald, taken during the 1910/20s (Lot 293-298, Estimate 800€-1.500€). From the oeuvre of Albert Renger-Patzsch several original prints are to be distinguished. For instance the early landscapes of the Ruhr area during the 1930s (Lot 254-275, Estimate 1.400€-2.200€). Also notable are several important, well preserved publications of the photographer, for example "Wegweisung der Technik" of 1927 (Lot 263, Estimate 1.200€) and "Die Welt ist schön" of 1928 (Lot 261, Estimate 1.200€). Original prints from the "Photowerkstätte Hugo Schmölz", traditionally a strong post in VAN HAM auctions, two appreciable photos of the Pressa architecture taken in 1928, catches the eye (Lot 325 & 326, Estimates 1.100€ respectively 1.200€). The 58 top class vintage prints of the photographers Paul Wolff and Alfred Tritschler depict the maiden flight of the aircraft "Graf Zeppelin" in 1936, consequently being excellent witnesses of their time (Lot 423, Estimate 8.000€). With the 1960s print "Chicago" from photographer Harry Callahan, an icon of the American photography is represented in the auction (Lot 59 Estimate 10.000). A later print of the well known photograph "Mainbocher Corset" from Horst P. Horst is estimated 5.500€ (Lot 158). The period between the 1950s and the 1970s is quite present in this years' spring auction. Notable is a vintage print by the Düsseldorf photographer-couple Bernd and Hilla Becher (Lot 21, Estimate 8.000€). The work of the American photographer Roy Schatt will be present with several photos of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Steve McQueen (Lot 315-321 Estimate 900-1.800€). The famous original print "Luminogramm" by Otto Steinert from the year 1952 is estimated 3.800€ (Lot 363). Further works of the "subjective photography" and the group "fotoform" are Peter Keetman (Lot 178 - 186, Estimate 2.000€ - 4.800€), Heinrich Riebesehl (Lot 264 - 273, Estimate 2.000€ respectively 2.400€), Toni Schneiders (Lot 332 - 339, Estimate 1.400€ -2.400€) and Ludwig Windstosser (Lot 414 - 418, Estimate 2.000€ - 2.200€). Estimated 2.000€ respectively 2.600€ are two original prints by Herbert List (Lot 211 & 212). Large format prints by the Becher-student Tata Ronkholz from the 1970/80s derive from her popular series "Trinkhallen" and "Industrietore" (Lot277-280 Estimate each 1.200€). Several prints from the popular series "Women are Beautiful" by Garry Winogrands will be up for auction with an estimate of 2.200€ each. 4000€ is the estimate for a rare vintage-print from the year 1962 by the renowned fashion photographer F.C. Gundlach (Lot 134). Two impressive portrait studies by Diane Arbus are estimated 8.000€ respectively 9.000€ (Lot 11 & 12). Exceptional prints of American landscape studies from the series "Uncommon places" by the American photographer Stephen Shore each estimated 4.500€ (Lot 347 - 350).
