A major figure in world and American photography, The Photographers' Gallery is delighted to present Joel Sternfeld's first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom. It allows us to appraise an artist who stands at the beginning of contemporary developments in the medium. Sternfeld's epic, detailed images are an acknowledged influence on Andreas Gursky, and also anticipate the imagery of the suburban landscape as developed by Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson. A contemporary of the New Topographic photographers - Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Henry Wessel, Jr - working from the mid-70s on, Sternfeld was to replace their cool, black-and-white neutrality, with luminous colour and dramatic incident, whilst developing a sense of the social and cultural significance of the landscape.
