pictures taken in free association, inspired by the topic of hair in the widest context Herlinde Koelbl here presents her new exhibition and book project with 120 photographs both in black and white and colour. The artist devoted four years of work to the project, entitled "Hair". She took photographs from Brazil to Burma, from Australia to Great Britain depicting the various ways people choose to make themselves more attractive and draw attention to themselves. Hair only fully develops its lustre and beauty when illuminated properly. For this reason she brought people into her studio in order to photograph them in front of a neutral background and with optimum lighting. Hair is a symbol for beauty, vitality, femininity, virility, erotic attractiveness and seductiveness. The story and the magic of hair begin back in the Old Testament and have been passed down from generation to generation and celebrated in all cultures in fairy tales, myths and poetry. In her photos Herlinde Koelbl plays with the full range of associations that hair conjures up: the hair we proudly present to the world and the intimate hair we keep hidden. The loss of hair as a symbol for dishonour and public shaming, but also of renunciation of the vanity of worldly things, hair as an ornament and a cult, in all colours, forms and textures. Hair as a sign of belonging and of being different from others, of beauty, sensuality, as part of our lives. We often take our hair for granted, without thinking, but it is a crucial element in defining our identity. The topic of hair brings back to almost everyone deeply affecting personal experiences, whether a disastrous haircut, the first adolescent hairs on their chin, the courage needed to part with a long mane of hair or the first grey hairs. Herlinde Koelbl's images span a bridge between artistic depiction and the emotional link every person has to her topic.
