The National Art Center Tokyo will hold a solo exhibition of Shigeo Anzai's documentary photographs. Anzai has been photographing sites central to modern art, mostly in Tokyo, from 1970 until today. His photographs have two values. The first is the artistic value of his portraits, born from the close relationship he has with artists. The other is the informational value of his documentary photographs that are a rare record of artists who have passed away. This dual value of Anzai's photographs is their strongest characteristic. Around 3000 photographs will be on display. The photographer chose the title "Personal Photo Archives" to embody the meaning of his photographs: an 'archive' of the development of modern art that he 'photographed' from a 'personal' viewpoint.
