Humanitas II: The People of Gujarat
Fredric Roberts - Poshina Girls , 2006

The Stephen Cohen Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by photographer Fredric Roberts. Humanitas II: The People of Gujarat, will be on view from November 29th to December 22, 2007. An opening reception and book signing will take place on Thursday November 29th from 7-9pm. In his new series of photographs, Fredric Roberts continues the exploration he began with his first series, Humanitas I. Using saturated colors, dynamic movement, and exquisite detail, Humanitas II beautifully documents the everyday actions of the people of the rural western states of India. Showing a variety of daily activities, Roberts gives us glimpses into the extraordinary lives of a people whose customs and traditions have largely stayed in tact despite years and years of global and cultural change. Through a variety of poignant portraits, Roberts touches on issues of class, spirituality, labor, and ritual. These portraits not only tell the stories of their subjects, but they also speak volumes about their culture's history and perseverance. Fredric Roberts is a former investment banker whose photographs are in some of the country's most respected collections including the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego and Stanford University. His work has been included in museum exhibitions including the Rubin Museum in New York, and currently, Pitzer College's Lenzner Gallery in Claremont California, whose show runs through October 31, 2007. The Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego has scheduled an exhibition of his work for the summer of 2008.
