Hans Scholten photographs cityscapes in teeming metropolises like Shanghai, Beijing, X'ian, Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo and Tehran. He doesn't aim his camera at the unique and typical old centres but rather at the mushrooming new neighbourhoods. In these areas, any form of regulated urban planning is non-existent and chaos is rife because the lay-out of these neighbourhoods is defined by the inhabitants themselves.
