The world renowned photographer Sebastiao Salgado reminds us, in htese beautiful and compassionate portraits of refugee and migrant children, what war, poverty and disaster do to the innocent. Salgado has spent decades photographing migrant populations around the world, and says that while it is clearly children who suffer most from being displaced they rarely show it. It is invariably children who approach him first, smiling and waving and trying to get into the picture. In Mozambique he was swamped by children and eventually told the,: 'If you want me to take a picture of you, line up'. 'For a brief moment', says Salgado, 'they were able to say 'I am''.  And so began this extraordinary series of portraits of refugee and migrant children from many countries.   Originally trained as an economist, Salgado turned to photography to convey the plight of the world's oppressed people, producing some of the most memorable images of our times. He has been awarded numerous major photographic prizes around the world.
