Gallery CAMERA WORK in Berlin presents from June 14 to July 26 photographs by fashion photographer Ralph Mecke. Ralph Mecke, born in Berlin and today living in Paris and New York, is a young master of fashion photography. His breakthrough in 1998, Mecke achieved through the publication of portraits of intellectuals and icons of culture in the french Vogue magazine. Nowadays the spectrum of his portraits ranges from personalities such as Georgio Armani or Keira Knightley to German artist Jonathan Meese. Early, Mecke discovered his interest for fashion photography, which nowadays builds his focus. His fashion lines can regularly be found in magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Vogue and GQ. Mecke mounts and interprets fashion in a way that clearly shows the partially gloomy essence under the beautiful surface. The portraits, fashion photos and still lives presented at CAMERA WORK are all created between 1995 and 2007 reveal both, emotion and beauty as well as mysterious, dark realities. While working, it is important for Mecke to give priority to his feeling of direct impression. "Real beauty is," as he says, "if something unexpected happens, giving brute emotional power to the picture." The artist is also a perfectionist when it comes to the final product. All effects for the photos are created in the studio - without any digital manipulation. A part of the colour photos presented in the exhibition have been produced by the use of the special dye transfer process. Because of the richness of tonal value, the colour depth and the brilliance achieved by the process, the dye transfer process is of paramount importance in the area of photographic printing technology. Collectors also appreciate it very much because of its light resistance and its archival stability. Unfortunately, this process is regarded as almost extinct today.

Die Galerie CAMERA WORK präsentiert vom 14. Juni bis zum 26. Juli den Berliner Photographen Ralph Mecke. Heute in Paris und New York lebend, gehört Mecke zu den jungen Meistern der Modephotographie. Der erste Durchbruch gelang ihm 1998 mit der Veröffentlichung seiner Portraits von Intellektuellen und Ikonen der Kulturszene in der französischen Vogue. Das Spektrum seiner Portraitaufnahmen reicht heute von Persönlichkeiten wie Giorgio Armani oder Keira Knightley bis hin zu Jonathan Meese. Bekannt als Portraitphotograph, wandte Mecke sich verstärkt der Modephotographie zu, die heute seinen Schwerpunkt darstellt. Seine Modestrecken findet man regelmäßig in Magazinen wie Harper`s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Vogue und GQ. Die Mode wird durch ihn auf eine Weise inszeniert und interpretiert, die die teils düstere Essenz unter der schönen Oberfläche deutlich sichtbar werden lässt. Die in der Ausstellung gezeigten Arbeiten offenbaren sowohl Emotionen und Schönheit, als auch mysteriöse, dunkle Wirklichkeiten. Die in der Ausstellung präsentierten Portraits, Modephotographien und Stillleben, entstanden zwischen 1995 und 2007. Bei der Arbeit ist es Mecke wichtig, seinem Gefühl des unmittelbaren Eindrucks Vortritt zu gewähren. Wahre Schönheit, wie er sagt, "ist, wenn etwas Unerwartetes passiert, das dem Bild rohe, emotionale Kraft gibt." Ein Perfektionist ist er auch, wenn es um das endgültige Produkt geht. Alle verwendeten Effekte entstehen – unter Verzicht auf digitale Manipulation – im Studio. Ein Teil der in der Ausstellung präsentierten Farbphotographien ist mit dem besonderen Dye-Transfer-Verfahren hergestellt worden. Durch den Tonwertreichtum, die Farbtiefe und die Brillanz, die von diesem Verfahren erreicht werden, nimmt die Dye-Tranfer-Methode eine solitäre Stellung im Bereich fotografischer Druckverfahren ein. Auch und gerade wegen ihrer Lichtbeständigkeit, ihrer Archivfestigkeit, wird sie von Sammlern sehr geschätzt. Leider gilt dieses Verfahren heutzutage als nahezu ausgestorben.
