With Thomas Ruff. Surfaces, Depths, the Kunsthalle Wien presents the first comprehensive survey of one of the most important photographers of his generation in Austria. Ruff (*1958, lives in Düsseldorf, Germany) received his technically sound training in the craft of photography at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts from 1977 to 1985, graduating as an internationally renowned student of the Bechers besides Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, and Thomas Struth. In his work, Ruff focuses on a wide range of everyday subjects, on people, architecture, the universe, and the Internet. The photographer strikes us as a sharp and concentrated observer of his motifs. To him, objectivity is nothing neutral though, but has to be redefined with each new photograph. The series of portraits which Ruff started on in 1986, for example, fascinates us because of the determined emotionlessness displayed by his models that are mostly close to him. Ruff's approach guarantees a hyper-precise, chirurgic gaze reproducing everything down to the last detail as equivalent. It also illustrates the degree of the artist's interest in the history of the medium of photography and how much he reflects on it. The show in Vienna will offer a representative selection of works from Thomas Ruff's production that spans about 25 years. Its analytical focus will be on 10 from altogether 18 work groups, the antagonism of surface and depth in its manifold forms constituting the thematic pivot and central thread. While we come upon the metaphor of the surface in his portraits and interiors, his photographs of apparatuses for generating composite pictures and his telescope and space probe pictures are formally determined by infinity and depth.

Thomas Ruff gehört zu den wichtigsten Fotografen der Gegenwart, dessen Werk den Blick auf so unterschiedliche Bereiche des Alltags lenkt wie Menschen, Architektur, den Kosmos, das Internet. Mit einer umfangreichen Einzelausstellung bestehend aus 11 Werkgruppen mit insgesamt rund 150 Einzelwerken ermöglicht die Kunsthalle Wien erstmals in Österreich einen umfassenden Einblick in das vielfältige Schaffen des Künstlers. Thomas Ruff ist ein scharfer und konzentrierter Beobachter seiner Motive. Objektivität ist für ihn dabei aber kein neutraler Begriff, sondern wird mit jeder Aufnahme von neuem befragt. Von Stereoskopien des Städtebaumythos Brasilia über anti-essayistisch anmutende und auf Handlungsanweisungen beruhende Architekturaufnahmen von Herzog & de Meuron bis hin zu digitalen Verarbeitungen von auf der NASA-Website frei verfügbaren Bildern des Planenten Saturn ergründet der Künstler die Begriffe des Exemplarischen, der Objektivität, der Realität und des Zeitgeistes. Zeitgerecht zum internationalen Astronomiejahr 2009 präsentiert Ruff Arbeiten aus seiner aktuellsten Serie Cassini — subtil manipulierte, von der Cassini-Raumsonde aufgenommene Bilder des Saturn und seiner Monde. Bei den ins Dreidimensionale gezogenen Kurvendarstellungen der zycles handelt es sich um die sinnliche Erfahrung vom Schweifen in virtuelle Tiefen, wie es nur dem Blick des menschlichen Auges vergönnt ist.
