PHOTOGRAPHY As in the past, Lempertz has divided the photography auction. The contemporary photography will be auctioned on 28 May in the morning together with contemporary art, while classic and contemporary photos with limits up to 2,000 Euro will be auctioned in the late afternoon the day before. Highlights of the classic photography are works by Heinrich Kühn (8,000–10,000), August Sander (10,000–15,000), Dorothea Lange (10,000–12,000), Ansel Adams (18,000–20,000), and Irving Penn (10,000). Further top lots are Bauhaus I and Bauhaus II, two portfolios with ten gelatin silver prints each (12,000). Contemporary photography highlights are three works by Hiroshi Sugimoto (10,000–12,000), as well as a portfolio of 60 gelatin silver prints by Rudolf Schwarzkogler (14,000–16,000). In 1931, August Sander photographed two farmers in Leuscheid and called the work Dorfphilosophen (village philosophers) (Lot 31, 10/15,000). Ansel Adams' Aspen, Northern New Mexico from the late 1950s is estimated even higher (Lot 114, 18/20,000). Dorothea Lange is represented with three works: her expressive portrait Migrant cotton picker, Eloy, Arizona from 1940 is estimated at 10/12.000, an early nude Torso, San Francisco at 6/8,000, and a stenographer's legs (Mended stockings) at 4/6,000 (Lot 62 ff.). Irving Penn's impressive portrait of Truman Capote has a limit of 10,000 (Lot 133). A characteristic, diffuse Still life with carafe, glass and peach by Heinrich Kühn is offered at 7/9,000 (Lot 12). The photograph of the Bauhaus balconies in Dessau by László Moholy-Nagy, dated 1927 (Lot 24, 3,000), is as captivating as it is rare. Alexander Rodtschenko plays on his passion for the circus with a photo of a Clown's act "The Entre'acte" from 1940 (Lot 50, 8,000). The Albanian-American photographer Gjon Mili shows Picasso in Vallauris painting a centaur with light (Lot 84, 6/8,000). The tension between Igor Stravinsky seated at the piano, and his instrument is pointedly portrayed by Arnold Newman (Lot 120, 5/6,000). Robert Mapplethorpe is represented four times: The hands and lower arms of Lowell Smith are taxed at 6,000, and at 5,000 each a still life Flower and Jim, Sausalito (Lots 162 ff.). An erotic Techno Torso by Günter Blum is taxed at 6,000 (Lot 166). F.C. Gundlach captures Romy Schneider's attractiveness in a photo from 1961 (Lot 104, 5,000). The same limit is set for two untitled convolutes by Toni Schneiders from the 1960s (Lots 95/96, 5,000 each). Edward Steichen's portrait of Gerhart Hauptmann has a limit of 4/5,000 (Lot 76), the photograph The anchor by Karl F. Struss, dated 1909, is taxed at 4/5,000 (lot 14), and Aaron Siskind's Jerome, Arizona is offered at 4/5,000 (Lot 112). Contemporary Photography at auction during the Contemporary Art Auction (28 May 2009) Hiroshi Sugimoto dominates the photography offer of Contemporary art with four lots: Top lot is his well-known Satellite City Towers from 2002 for 18/22,000. Café de Unie is 10,000 as is Peter Behrens' AEG Turbine Factory in Berlin. Testing Machine has a lower estimate (5/7,000, Lots 578 ff.). A portfolio of 60 gelatin silver prints of performances by Rudolf Schwarzkogler from 1965/66 has a limit of 14/16,000 (Lot 588). Two cibachrome prints by Michael Wesely from 1998 are 8,000 each (Lots 621/622). One of the unmistakeable gasometer by Bernd and Hilla Becher is offered at 5/6,000 (Lot 313). The Helsinki School is represented by a captivating landscape Uumannaq I by Tiina Itkonen (lot 410, 5,000) and an architectural study by Ola Kolehmainen (lot 428, 7,000).

KLASSISCHE PHOTOGRAPHIE (27. Mai) 1931 photographierte August Sander zwei Bauern aus Leuscheid und nannte die Aufnahme Dorfphilosophen (Lot 31, 10/15.000). Noch höher bewertet ist Aspen, Northern New Mexico, von Ansel Adams aus den späten 50er Jahren (Lot 114, 18/20.000). Dorothea Lange ist mit drei Arbeiten vertreten. Ihr ausdrucksstarkes Portrait eines Wanderarbeiters von 1940 liegt bei 10/12.000, ein früherer Akt-Torso bei 6/8.000 und die Beine einer Stenographin kommen auf 4/6.000 (Lots 62 ff.). Irving Penns beeindruckende Aufnahme von Truman Capote trägt eine Taxe von 10.000 (Lot 133). Von Heinrich Kühn werden eine unbetitelte und nicht datierte Aufnahme mit zwei Wäscherinnen an einem Fluss und eines seiner charakteristischen, unscharfen Stilleben offeriert (Lots 12/13, 8/10.000 u. 7/9.000). Ebenso reizvoll wie selten ist die Aufnahme Bauhausbalkone in Dessau Moholy-Nagys von 1927 (Lot 24, 3.000). Alexander Rodtschenko huldigt seiner Zirkusleidenschaft mit der Aufnahme einer Clownsnummer Der Zwischenakt von 1940 (Lot 50, 8.000). Der albanisch-amerikanische Photograph Gjon Mili zeigt Picasso, wie er in Vallauris mit Licht einen Zentauren zeichnet (Lot 84, 6/8.000). Pointiert ist das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen den am Flügel sitzenden Strawinsky und seinem Instrument bei Arnold Newmans Portrait (Lot 120, 5/6.000). Vierfach ist Robert Mapplethorpe präsent. Die Hände und Unterarme von Lowell Smith kommen auf 6.000 und auf je 5.000 ein Blumenstilleben wie auch die Aufnahme Jim, Sausalito (Lots 162 ff.). Bei 6.000 liegt die Taxe für Günter Blums erotischen Techno Torso (Lot 166, 6.000). F.C. Gundlach erfaßt in einer Aufnahme von 1961 die Attraktivität Romy Schneiders (Lot 104, 5.000). Diese Taxe ist auch für zwei unbetitelte Konvolute der 1960er Jahre von Toni Schneiders angesetzt (Lots 95/96, je 5.000). Auf je 4/5.000 kommen ein Portrait Edward Steichens von Gerhart Hauptmann (Lot 76, 4/5.000), die Aufnahme eines Segelschiffankers von Karl F. Struss aus dem Jahr 1909 (Lot 14, 4/5000) und Aaron Siskinds Jerome, Arizona (Lot 112, 4/5.000). ZEITGENÖSSISCHE PHOTOGRAPHIE IM RAHMEN DER AUKTION ZEITGENÖSSISCHE KUNST (28. Mai) Hiroshi Sugimoto dominiert mit seinen vier Losen die Photographie-Offerte der Zeitgenös-sischen Kunst. Spitzenlos sind seine bekannten Satellite City Towers von 2002 für 18/22.000.
