My Grandma was a Turtle is photographer Cuny Janssen’s latest project. The title refers to the Turtle clan of the matriarchic Delaware Indian tribe in Oklahoma. In 2008, Janssen visited the town of Bartlesville in Oklahoma to photograph children with Native American ancestors and their surroundings. Her motivation was curiosity about what traces of their origins could be seen in these modern native American children. Both her photos of people as well as the images of landscapes are candid, timeless and possess a subtle lyricism.
