JULIAN SCHNABEL. POLAROIDS This summer, the NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf will exhibit Polaroids by the American painter and film-maker Julian Schnabel. The exhibition will include about 100 snapshots—most of which have never been shown in public before—that capture those things that captured the attention of the artist: himself, his family, his friends, his paintings and sculptures in studios and exhibitions ... In short, the exhibition offers a unique tableau of images from the life and work of a dazzling artist. The selection includes charismatic portraits of Lou Reed, Placido Domingo, Mickey Rourke, and The Beastie Boys, as well as pictures of the private rooms in Palazzo Chupi in New York (which Schnabel himself designed and decorated) and his studios in Brooklyn, Montauk, and Manhattan. Schnabel used a huge, spectacular 20 x 24-inch Polaroid camera on wheels dating from the 1970s to create unusually large-format images (51 x 61 cm) in both black and white and brilliant colour. He also painted over some of the photos. Schnabel became famous in the early 1980s for his plate paintings. He also made a name for himself as a director and screenplay writer with his first film, which was about his friend and fellow artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1996) and his second film, Before Night Falls. His latest film will premier at this year's Cannes Film Festival in May. He has exhibited in all the world's greatest museums and his works can be found in outstanding public and private collections. Curator of the exhibition is Petra Giloy-Hirtz. This exhibition is supported by the Government of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the photo laboratory Grieger, and ERCO.

JULIAN SCHNABEL. POLAROIDS Das NRW-Forum Düsseldorf zeigt Polaroids des amerikanischen Malers und Filmemachers Julian Schnabel. Die Ausstellung präsentiert eine Auswahl von etwa 100 bisher meist unveröffentlichten Fotografien, die den unmittelbaren Blick des Künstlers bannen: auf sich selbst, auf Familie und Freunde, auf seine Malerei und seine Skulpturen in Studios und Ausstellungen - ein einzigartiges Tableau von Bildern über Leben und Arbeit der schillernden Künstlerpersönlichkeit. Da gibt es charismatischen Portraits von Lou Reed, Placido Domingo, Mickey Rourke oder den Beastie Boys ebenso wie Bilder der privaten Räume in dem von Julian Schnabel selbst entworfenen und ausgestatteten Palazzo Chupi in New York, Schnabels Ateliers in Brooklyn, Montauk oder in Manhattan. Mit einer spektakulären riesigen 20 x 24 inch-Polaroid Kamera auf Rollen aus den 70er Jahren macht Julian Schnabel diese Photographien von ungewöhnlich großem Format (50,8 x 60,96 cm) in schwarz/weiß und brillanten Farben, manche dieser Photos übermalt er. Schnabel, wurde berühmt mit seinen plate paintings Anfang der 80er Jahre. Mit seinem ersten Film über den Freund und Malerkollegen Jean-Michel Basquiat 1996 und seinem zweiten Film Before Night Falls hat sich Schnabel auch als Regisseur und Drehbuchautor einen Namen gemacht (sein neuer Kinofilm Miral wird beim diesjährigen Filmfestival in Cannes im Mai Premiere haben). Er hat in allen bedeutenden Museen der Welt ausgestellt und ist in hervorragenden öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen repräsentiert. Die Ausstellung wurde kuratiert von Petra Giloy-Hirtz. Sie wurde ermöglicht durch die Unterstützung der Landesregierung Nordrhein-Westfalen, dem Fotolabor Grieger und durch ERCO. Zur Ausstellung wird eine Monographie von Petra Giloy-Hirtz erscheinen (Petra Giloy-Hirtz, Julian Schnabel. Polaroids, Prestel Verlag 2010) zudem wird zeitgleich eine kleinere Auswahl von Arbeiten in der Münchner Galerie Bernheimer Fine Art Photography gezeigt.
