Exhibition Curator: Alban de La FonSon of a famous sculptor, Mario Cravo Neto was born in 1947 in Salvador, Bahia. Nurtured in the cultural setting of his native city, he began his first artistic experiences very early on: sculpture, drawing, installation, photography and video. Throughout his life, he did not pose any boundaries between the different orientations taken by his artistic activity. Thirty-five black and white prints and private videos are presented in an exhibition at the Galerie Esther Woerdehoff.

Steeped in the Yoruba culture, Mario Cravo Neto’s black and white work takes us back to the myth of the eternal return, the search for a lost Eden, the bond that joined man to nature, man to the divine. His photographic research lies in the enigma, the intangible, “inaccessible in the same way as gods, the Orishas and the dead”.

Created using sophisticated techniques, his photographs have a direct sensuality and seem paradoxically obvious. In almost all the photographs his models are blindfolded or their eyes are hidden by objects or animals, or photographed from behind, preventing them access to the visible world: a face hidden by a tortoise, small white birds or gold thread; a large pebble emerging from an ear, two fish thrown over a shoulder like Homeric armour. These are just some of the emblematic images found in the work of Mario Cravo Neto on show at the gallery.

His work evokes in a perfectly iconic and dreamlike way, the ancestral gestures of Candomblé, the rituals of body painting and sacrifice. Mario Cravo Neto bequeaths us a ferment of visions, a mixture of revelations in mythic silver salts offering a potion of imagination to those willing to experience it. His photographs seem “to deify the human and humanize the divine”.

Considered by many to be one of the most important contemporary Brazilian artists, Mario Cravo Neto died 9 August 2009, in Salvador, Bahia.

Fils d’un sculpteur célèbre, Mario Cravo Neto est né en 1947 à Salvador de Bahia. Bercé dans le milieu culturel de sa ville natale, il a commencé très tôt ses premières expériences artistiques : sculpture, dessin,
installation, photo ou vidéo ; il ne s’est mis aucune frontière entre les différentes orientations prises par son activité artistique tout au long de sa vie. À la Galerie Esther Woerdehoff, seront présentés 35 tirages en noir et blanc et des vidéos personnelles.

Imprégnée de la culture Yoruba, l’oeuvre en noir et blanc de Mario Cravo Neto nous ramène au mythe de l’éternel retour, à la recherche d’un éden perdu, de ce lien qui unissait l’homme à la nature, l’homme au divin. Ses recherches photographiques se situent sur le terrain de l’énigme, de l’intangible, tout « comme sont inaccessibles les dieux, les Orixas et les morts ». Ses photographies, à la technique raffinée, sont d’une sensualité immédiate et d’une évidence paradoxale. Sur presque toutes les photographies, ses modèles ont les yeux bandés ou cachés par des objets, des animaux, ou encore photographiés de dos les empêchant d’avoir accès au monde visible.

Un visage caché par une tortue, par de petits oiseaux blancs ou par des fils d’or. Un galet émergeant d’une oreille, deux poissons jetés sur une épaule, comme une armure homérique. Autant d’images emblématiques du travail de Mario Cravo Neto qui sont présentées à la galerie.

Son oeuvre évoque de manière parfaitement iconique et onirique, les gestes ancestraux du Candomblé, les rituels de badigeonnage du corps et de sacrifice. Mario Cravo Neto nous lègue un bouillonnement de visions, un mélange d’épiphanies aux sels d’argent mythiques offrant une potion d’imaginaire à ceux qui voudront bien en faire l’expérience. Ses photographies semblent « diviniser l’humain et humaniser le divin ».

Considéré par beaucoup comme l’un des artistes brésiliens contemporains les plus importants, Mario Cravo Neto est décédé le 9 août 2009, à Salvador de Bahia.
