With varied and exciting themes, the photomeetings luxembourg hit right at the heart of contemporary photographic discourse. The 6th edition of the festival focuses on the theme “magazine photography”. Between the 7th-11th of September 2010, internationally renowned photographers, photo-artists and lecturers highlight and discuss the practical and theoretical issues of making photo magazines today by way of workshops, lectures and exhibitions. As in previous years, topic specialists will lecture during the symposium. All events are aimed equally at professional photographers, photography experts, and students, as well as at interested amateurs and photography lovers. “Magazine photography” is closely related to editorial photography as its base. The definition of editorial photography centres on images that depict real world and fantasy issues with an emphasis on “telling the story” in picture form. The aim of the 6th edition of photomeetings luxembourg is to produce pictures that enlighten the viewer, illuminating what words cannot communicate. This theme provides a variety of workshop possibilities, based on the structure of magazines today (portrait, architecture, reportage, photojournalism, fashion...). The festival will highlight different controversial aspects of magazine photography through lectures, dealing for example with copyright issues and possible ways of publishing one’s work in magazines etc. Europe is learning together: in cooperation with local participants, 8 universities and colleges from 7 European countries will take part in photomeetings luxembourg 2010. As a European cross-border project, 2010 will see 60 students from the photography, video and media departments of these colleges raising questions and investigating the basis of magazine photography. 6-13 students from each university are participating. They will have worked on the theme during the summer semester 2010 and their resulting photographs will be presented in an exhibition within photomeetings luxembourg 2010 at the “Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg” and the “Konschthaus beim Engel”.
