WEEGEE’S NEW YORK This exhibition, with its 280 black/white original prints, lets us discover the world of New York. It is the artwork of only one photographer, Arthur H. Fellig, known as Weegee, an Austro-Hungarian who decided to go live the dream of this ‘Free America’ mentioned by his father, an unsuccessful trader who took refuge from reality by reading the Torah. These prints are from a collection of 400 Weegee prints, which are part of Michèle and Michel Auer’s collection, gathered by a friend of the couple and of Weegee, Louis Stettner, who is the first author to really notice the important and unique work of this extraordinary street witness and of his amazing odyssey, which today is recognized as a work of art in itself. These vintage photographs, known, less known or even unpublished, will reveal Weegee’s extensive path, from 1932 till the 1960s: never seen before! They are accompanied by a catalog (foreign book prize at PhotoEspagna, Madrid), containing for the first time all of the photographer’s themes, on which he had worked his entire life, such as: people sleeping, the rich, the poor, fires, the police, the dead, the street, the circus, Harlem, Coney Island, portraits of movie stars… and his last research on special effects. Arthur H. Fellig, the resourceful (born in Zloczow on June 12, 1899 – death in New York City on December 26, 1968), who worked tirelessly toward becoming Weegee, wanted more than anything else freedom, money, glory and women. He got it all, including a reputation as an artist, which made no impression on him, but still! He became renowned among publishers and the press, through his signature, a stamp that he used as a joke, but that he still puts many times on the back of his prints: «Credit photo by Weegee the Famous». Weegee was not discreet. He faced what he wanted to show, to denounce, even if it meant to provoke and add a little something to the scene. He was ready to bear witness to the American dream, its economic crisis, of its sociological reality with its unemployment, poverty, prostitution, pleasures, crimes, gangs… On both feet, he held firmly the camera, like a weapon, facing human condition in this changing world, with the street as studio, and the sun as his flash. Auer Photo Foundation created in March 2009 by M + M Auer, the Auer Photo Foundation for Photography aims to preserve and promote the existing collection, and to acquire new objects and photographic works. Ces tirages proviennent d’une collection de 400 tirages de Weegee, une collection dans la collection de Michèle et Michel Auer, rassemblée par un ami du couple et de Weegee, Louis Stettner, le premier auteur à relever ce travail important et particulier de ce témoin de la rue hors norme et de son époustouflante odyssée, qui aujourd’hui, est reconnu comme une œuvre d’art à part entière Ces vintages connus, moins connus ou encore, inédits, vont développer un parcours étendu de Weegee, de 1932 aux années 1960, du jamais vu ! Elle est accompagnée d’un catalogue (prix du livre étranger à PhotoEspana, Madrid) retraçant, pour la première fois, tous les thèmes du photographe auxquels il a travaillé tout au long de sa vie, comme les dormeurs, les riches, les pauvres, les incendies, la police, les morts, la rue, le cirque, Harlem, Coney Island, portraits de stars du cinéma… et ses dernières recherches aux effets spéciaux. Arthur H. Fellig le débrouillard (Zloczow 12 juin 1899 – 26 décembre New York City) qui a travaillé sans relâche à être Weegee, veut plus que tout, la liberté, l’argent, la gloire et les femmes. Il a tout eu, y compris une réputation d’artiste, ce qui ne lui a fait aucun effet, mais quand même ! Il a atteint une renommée auprès des éditeurs et de la presse, à travers sa signature, un tampon qu’il prend pour une plaisanterie mais qu’il tamponne abondamment au dos de ses tirages: «Credit photo by Weegee the Famous». Weegee n’est pas discret, il fait face à ce qu’il veut faire voir, dénoncer, quitte à provoquer et à ajouter un quelque chose dans la scène. Il est prêt à témoigner du rêve américain, de sa crise économique, de sa réalité sociologique, avec son chômage, sa pauvreté, sa prostitution, ses plaisirs, ses crimes, ses gangs… Sur ses deux pieds, il tient fermement l’appareil, comme une arme, face à la condition humaine dans ce monde en devenir, avec pour studio, la rue, son soleil: son flash.
