CAMERA WORK is looking forward to presenting David Drebin's new photographs, some of which originated in Berlin, from November 27, 2010, on. At the opening of the exhibition, his new illustrated book, "The Morning After," published by teNeues, will be presented exclusively at CAMERA WORK.

David Drebin’s photographs are epic, dramatic and, above all, cinematic. His work combines voyeuristic and psychological viewpoints in a unique manner. The photographer offers to the beholder an exciting insight into the emotions and experiences of the protagonists of his illustrative worlds. It is predominantly the night shots of glittering metropolises such as New York, Hong Kong, and San Francisco which serve as gigantic backdrops for his photographs. With their impressive skyscrapers, they provide the beholder with a nearly infinite surface for the imagination. Thus, it is only consistent that Drebin gives the viewer a voyeuristic insight into the apartments, where he mystically stages attractive women in a glamorous and sexy manner.

Drebin's intention is to liberate the viewer from the rules and standards of everyday life and to restore his faith, emotion, and humanity. The distinctive tension in his pictures arises from the combination of such topics as humor, love, and sex, as well as loneliness and melancholy. The panorama of the big cities, which, due to their format, form a tribute to cinema, serve as a stage for self-determined women, who are heroic even in mourning. Drebin lets the beholder share in these women's desires, dreams, and hopes. He always approaches them with great respect, and he manages to capture moments full of poignant intimacy and captivating heartiness.

After successfully completing the Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1996, David Drebin rapidly made a name for himself as an internationally successful commercial and fashion photographer. Among his admirers are such personalities as Ben Stiller and Sir Elton John. As early as in 2005, Drebin had his first solo exhibition at CAMERA WORK. This was followed by a comprehensive illustrated book entitled “Love and Other Stories” in 2007. His second publication with the title “Dreamscapes & Girls“ offers an exemplary overview of Drebins work from the years 2000 to 2009. 52 photographs in total demonstrate the versatility of the artist’s work. Cityscapes and fashion photographs are complemented by panoramic pictures of Capri or the majestic coast near the Italian city of Amalfi.

Since September 24, 2010, some of David Drebin's works have been presented in Stockholm's FOTOGRAFISKA museum in the group exhibition “Fashion!“, curated by CAMERA WORK. Michelle Le Roy, chief curator of FOTOGRAFISKA, wrote the preface to the catalog published by teNeues on the occasion of the current exhibition "The Morning After."

CAMERA WORK freut sich, ab dem 27. November 2010 die neuen Photographien von David Drebin – einige davon sind in Berlin entstanden – zu präsentieren. Zur Ausstellungseröffnung wird der neue im teNeues Verlag erscheinende Photoband „The Morning After“ exklusiv bei CAMERA WORK vorgestellt.

David Drebins Photographien sind episch, dramatisch und vor allem cineastisch. Sein Werk ist eine einzigartige Kombination aus voyeuristischem und psychologischem Blick. Der Photograph bietet dem Betrachter einen aufregenden Einblick in die Gefühle und Erfahrungen der Protagonisten seiner Bildwelten. Als gigantische Kulissen dienen ihm vorwiegend Nachtaufnahmen von glitzernden Metropolen wie New York, Hong Kong oder San Francisco. Mit ihren imposanten Wolkenkratzern bilden sie für den Betrachter eine nahezu unendliche Imaginationsfläche. So ist es nur konsequent, dass Drebin den Betrachter als Voyeur mit in die Appartments blicken lässt, in denen er glamourös wie sexy attraktive Frauen geheimnisvoll in Szene setzt.

Drebins Intention ist es, den Betrachter aus dem Regelwerk des Alltags zu befreien und ihm Glauben, Gefühl und Menschlichkeit wiederzugeben. Die unverwechselbare Bildspannung entsteht durch die Kombination von Themen wie Humor, Liebe oder Sex aber auch Einsamkeit und Melancholie. Die Großstadtpanoramen, in ihrem Format eine Hommage an das Kino, dienen als Bühne für selbstbestimmte, selbst in ihrer Trauer heroische Frauen. Drebin lässt den Betrachter Teilhaben an ihren Sehnsüchten, Träumen und Hoffnungen. Er nähert sich ihnen stets mit großem Respekt und ihm gelingt es, Momente voll ergreifender Intimität und fesselnder Innigkeit einzufangen.


Nachdem David Drebin im Jahr 1996 die Parsons School of Design in New York City erfolgreich beendet hat, machte er sich rasant einen Namen als international erfolgreicher Werbe- und Modephotograph. Insgesamt 52 Photographien zeigen die Vielfältigkeit im Werk des Künstlers. Stadtansichten und Modephotographien werden durch Panoramasaufnahmen von Capri oder auch der majestätischen Küste bei der italienischen Stadt Amalfi ergänzt.

Seit dem 24. September 2010 werden einige Arbeiten von David Drebin in Stockholm in der von CAMERA WORK im FOTOGRAFISKA Museum kuratierten Gruppenausstellung „Fashion!“ präsentiert. Michelle Le Roy, Chefkuratorin von FOTOGRAFISKA, ist die Verfasserin des Vorworts im anlässlich der aktuellen Ausstellung „The Morning After“ im teNeues Verlag erscheinenden Katalogs..
