Exposition de photographies réalisées pendant les tournages du « Parrain » et de « Taxi Driver »

En 1971, Francis Ford Coppola commença à travailler sur « Le Parrain », un des films les plus marquants de l’histoire du cinéma. Steve Schapiro, un célèbre photojournaliste de 37 ans fut embauché par la Paramount en tant que photographe attitré pour le film. Ce statut a donné accès à Schapiro à l'un des plus prodigieux castings jamais réuni, lui permettant de photographier des scènes cultes du film et de capturer des moments mémorables souvent cités en référence tels que « le murmure » et Marlon Brando avec le chat.


Quatre ans plus tard, à la demande de Robert De Niro, Schapiro décroche le poste de photographe de plateau sur le tournage de « Taxi Driver », un des films les plus connus de Martin Scorsese, qui célèbre aujourd’hui ses 35 ans avec un livre de photos publié aux Editions TASCHEN. À travers l’oeil de Schapiro, nous découvrons DeNiro alias Travis Bickle, peaufiner sa position de tir devant le miroir et Jodie Foster alias Iris, faisant le pied de grue devant la porte de l'hôtel.


Steve Schapiro est un photographe reconnu à qui l’on doit également la campagne présidentielle de Robert Kennedy et le sort des travailleurs migrants dans l'Arkansas. Activiste ainsi que documentariste, Schapiro a couvert de nombreuses histoires liées au mouvement des droits civils, dont la Marche sur Washington, la marche de Selma à Montgomery et l’après Martin Luther King, produisant ainsi quelques-unes des plus emblématiques images de cette époque.

Steve Schapiro a réalisé des reportages pour les magazines les plus prestigieux: Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone, People et Paris Match. Il a également photographié les plateaux des plus grands films : Le Parrain, Macadam Cowboy, Taxi Driver et Chinatown. Ses tirages sont présents dans les collections du Smithsonian Institute (Washington, D.C), High Museum of Art (Atlanta, GA) et la National Portrait Gallery (Washington, D.C.). Avec The Godfather Family Album et TaxI Driver, publiés par TASCHEN, les photographies de Steve Schapiro sont visibles dans American Edge (Arena Editions, 2000) et Schapiro's Heroes (Powerhouse Books, 2007).

Le photographe travaille également avec TASCHEN sur un livre de ses photos du tournage de Chinatown.

Exhibition of photographs taken during the shooting of « The Godfather » movies and « Taxi Driver »
from March 21st to May 14th, 2011.

In 1971, Francis Ford Coppola started work on « The Godfather », one of the most acclaimed films ever made. Steve Schapiro, then a 37-year old established photojournalist was hired by Paramount as the special photographer for the film. This title gave Schapiro unprecedented access to one of the most stellar casts ever assembled, photographing whichever film scenes he chose, capturing the memorable moments often cited when referencing this film, including "the whisper", and Marlon Brando with the cat.

Four years later, at the request of Robert DeNiro, Schapiro landed the job as the special photographer on the set of Taxi Driver, one of Martin Scorsese’s most seminal films, which is currently celebrating its 35 year anniversary release with a book published by TASCHEN. Through Schapiro’s lens, we see DeNiro as Travis Bickle, practicing his firing stance in front of a mirror and Jodie Foster as Iris, standing in the hotel doorway.

Steve Schapiro is an acclaimed photographer whose photo essays included the presidential campaign of Robert Kennedy and the plight of migrant workers in Arkansas. An activist as well as a documentarian, Schapiro has covered many stories related to the Civil Rights movement including the March on Washington, the Selma to Montgomery March, and the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, producing some of the most iconic images of that era.

Steve Schapiro’s photographs have been widely published in magazines such as Life, Look, Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone, People and Paris Match. He has shown his work in museums and galleries worldwide, and can be found in the collections of The Smithsonian Museum (Washington, D.C.), The High Museum of Art (Atlanta, GA) and the National Portrait Gallery (Washington, D.C.). Along with The Godfather and Taxi Driver, both published by TASCHEN, Schapiro’s work can be found in American Edge (Arena Editions, 2000) and Schapiro’s Heroes (Powerhouse Books, 2007).

The photographer is also working with TASCHEN on a book of his images from the set of Chinatown.
