Once Upon a Time

Fables, myths, and fairy tales have long allowed cultures to explore wondrous aspects of their world. As times and contexts shift, so do these stories grow and evolve in the imaginations of their audiences. These traditions have been embraced by artists who use the mediums of film and video to conceive new folklore or adapt older tales to reveal often overlooked elements of more recent history.

Once Upon a Time features a selection of video installations and single-channel works by Francis Alÿs, Cao Fei, Pierre Huyghe, Aleksandra Mir, Mika Rottenberg, and Janaina Tschäpe from the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum that explore this practice in contemporary art.

Mit der Frage, wie man heute mittels Videokunst fantastische Geschichten und moderne Märchen erzählen kann, beschäftigt sich Once Upon a Time. Anhand von bedeutenden Arbeiten aus der Sammlung des Solomon R. Guggenheim Museums untersucht die Ausstellung, wie zeitgenössische Video-Künstler Motive und Erzähltechniken aus Mythen, Fabeln und Märchen adaptieren, um aktuelle gesellschaftliche Phänomene oder Ereignisse der jüngeren Geschichte zu reflektieren.

Once Upon a Time zeigt eine Auswahl von Videoinstallationen und Einkanal-Arbeiten von Francis Alÿs, Cao Fei, Pierre Huyghe, Aleksandra Mir, Mika Rottenberg und Janaina Tschäpe, die sich mit dieser Praxis in der zeitgenössischen Kunst beschäftigen.
