ALESSANDRA SANGUINETTI

In the remote farmlands near Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alessandra Sanguinetti produced a series of photographs entitled On the Sixth Day that centered on the symbiotic relationship between the farmers, their animals, and the land. While working on this series she first met Guille and Belinda whose families lived and worked on these farms. The two cousins were ten and nine years old when Sanguinetti began to photograph them. Sanguinetti sought to portray the psychological and physical transformations of these girls as they matured into adults.

As opposed to a more traditional documentary narrative of these two girls growing up in this rural environment, Sanguinetti instead focused on the desires and dreams of their active imaginations. Sanguinetti writes, "I have attempted to interpret the ending of their childhood by entering their imaginary spaces. The time when their dreams, fantasies, and fears would fuse seamlessly with real day-to-day life are ending, and
the photographs I have made intend to crystallize this rapidly disappearing very personal and free space." The resulting series of images, presented here under the title The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams, represents not only an elaborate collaboration between photographer and subject but an intimate relationship cultivated over a years.

Today, Alessandra Sanguinetti continues to explore with photography the life of the two girls who became women then mothers and the approach of their environement, intimacy and everyday life.

The exhibition at the Magnum Gallery will present her most recent photographs and an unseen series in black and white Sweet Expectations, sensitive portraits of children, that were already revealing Alessandra Sanguinetti’s photographic approach.

Alessandra Sanguinetti was born in 1968 in New York and brought upto Argentina from.1970 to 2003 and currently based in San Francisco.
Her photographs are included inpublic and private collections such as MOMA NY, SF MOMA, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
Her books On the Sixth Day (2006) and The Adventures of Guille and Belinda (2010) have been published by Nazraeli Press.

Dans les fermes éloignées près de Buenos Aires en Argentine, Alessandra Sanguinetti a travaillé sur une série de photographies intitulée On the Sixth Day concentrée sur la relation entre les fermiers, leurs animaux et la terre. Pendant qu’elle travaillait sur cette série, elle rencontra Guille et Belinda dont les familles vivaient et travaillaient dans ces fermes. Les deux cousines avaient alors 10 et 9 ans quand Sanguinetti commença à les photographier. Elle chercha à a faire un portrait psychologique et des transformations physiques des deux filles qui grandissaient vers l’âge adulte.

Finalement opposé à la narration du documentaire traditionnel, Alessandra Sanguinetti se centra sur les rêves et l’imagination de ces deux cousines. Elle en dit : « J’ai essayé d’interpréter la fin de leur enfance en entrant dans leur espace imaginaire. Le temps où leurs rêves et peurs fusionnaient avec leur vie quotidienne disparassait alors. Les photographies que j’ai réalisées tentent de cristalliser la disparition rapide et personnelle de leur espace de liberté. »

Cette série est présentée comme The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams, représente non seulement une collaboration étroite entre le photographe et ses sujets mais aussi une relation intime cultivée à travers de nombreuses années.

Aujourd’hui, Alessandra Sanguinetti continue son exploration photographique de ces deux jeunes filles devenues femmes puis mères, et continue d’explorer leur environnement, leur intimité, leur quotidien.

L’exposition présentée à la galerie, mêlera ses photographies les plus récentes avec une série inédite en noir et blanc, Sweet Expectations, des portraits sensibles d’enfants qui annonçaient déjà l’approche photographique d’Alessandra Sanguinetti.

Alessandra Sanguinetti, est née à New York en 1968 et a grandi en Argentine de 1970 à 2003. Elle est actuellement basée à San Francisco et est devenue membre de Magnum Photos en 2011. Ses photographies font partie de collections privées et publiques comme le SF MOMA, MOMA NY, Museum of Fine Arts de Houston, Museum of Fine Arts de Boston
Son livre On the Sixth Day a été publié par Nazraeli Press en 2006 et The Adventures of Guille et Belinda par le même éditeur en 2010.
