In Memoriam
@ Jouko Lehtola, from the series Young Heroes, 1995

Photographic Gallery Hippolyte pays a tribute to photographer Jouko Lehtola who died in September 2010. The memorial exhibition includes highlights from Lehtola's career, including works from the 1990s Young Heroes series as well as from his last series featuring nature motifs. Works in the exhibition are selected by Lehtola's wife Jaana Novitskij and by photographer Stefan Bremer.

Jouko Lehtola (1963–2010), known more familiarly as Jönssi, was a central as well as a popular figure in Finnish photography. His influence ranged far and wide, not only through his photographic works, but also through his teaching. In addition to his artistic work, Lehtola also had an impressive career as a press and rock photographer. Exhibition texts on Lehtola's career and his impact were written by Stefan Bremer and art historian Asko Mäkelä.

In his testament, Jouko Lehtola expressed his wish for a foundation bearing his name. He wanted the Jouko Lehtola Foundation to support young documentary photographers financially and otherwise, and to promote the dissemination of his own artistic work. The foundation is in the process of being established, and will start operating before the end of the year.

There will be a panel discussion on Thursday, 12 May, at 5 pm, exploring Jouko Lehtola's career and his influence on Finnish photography. The panellists will be Stefan Bremer, Asko Mäkelä and Jaana Novitskij.
