Scenes of London from 1930s to 1980s
Wolfgang Suschitzky (b. 1912)
Now in his 100th year, Viennese photographer Wolfgang Suschitzky is best known for his captivating images of London in the 1930s and 1940s. From the booksellers of Charing Cross Road, to the romance of the fairground and an industrial River Thames, Suschitzky captures the city’s street life with an affectionate and candid eye.
Over a number of recent visits to Suschitzky’s home our Print Sales team have selected key photographs depicting London from the 1930s through to the 1980s, including several rare vintage prints, now on sale for the first time.
Suschitzky is collected and exhibited internationally. As well as working as a photographer, he worked as a cameraman and Director of Photography on over 200 documentary and feature films including Ulysses (1967) and Get Carter (1971), and was honoured in 2007 by the BFI with a special film screening for his 95th birthday.
