On Wednesday, 23 November 2011 Villa Grisebach will auction circa 180 lots of modern and contemporary photography in Berlin.

In the late nineteen hundreds the American photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis began his comprehensive work of a lifetime, “The North American Indian.” “The Vanishing Race,” being offered in a 1904 platinum print, is one of its most famous motifs (€ 3,000/4,000). Two further works by Curtis are the impressive portrait “A Walpi Man,” (1922, photogravure € 2,500/3,500) and the Cyanotype “Cheyenne” (Return of Scouts), created circa 1910 (€ 1,500/2,000).

Ansel Adams is represented with “Storm over the Great Plains from Cimarron, New Mexico” (€ 10,000/15,000). Heinrich Kühn’s Platinotype “Hans und Edeltrude im Gras (II)” (€ 5,000/7,000), August Sander’s 1910 portrait of “Josefine Bamann” (1927) in an early print (€ 6,000/8,000), Emil Otto Hoppé’s vintage print “Berlin, Gasbehälter” of 1927-1930 (€ 5,000/7,000), Josef Breitenbach’s “Fräulein Greno” in a vintage print of 1932 (€ 5,000/6,000) and works by Henri Cartier Bresson, Harold Edgerton, Andreas Feininger, Ralph Gibson, Horst P. Horst, André Kertesz, Albert Renger-Patzsch (among these early plant photographs for Auriga Verlag, Darmstadt, attributed to the artist), Josef Sudek, Herbert Tobias and others are featured as well. Especially rare is the portfolio of photographs “New York” (1928-1929) by the German architect Paul Grotz (€ 3,000/5,000) and a portrait, photographed in 1930 of Walker Evans (€ 2,500/3,000). The negative to this print is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Important works of well-known photo artists are featured in the contemporary photographs section: Thomas Ruff’s large “h.l.k 01” (€ 20,000/25,000), two works by Hiroshi Sugimoto from the “Theaters” series (each € 16,000/20,000), Andres Serrano’s “Objects of Desire (FB Radom 9mm)” (€ 14,000/18,000) and “The Church” (€ 10,000/15,000), Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled # 372” from the series „Bus Riders“ (€ 9,000/12,000) as well as works by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Dieter Appelt, Nobuyoshi Araki, Sibylle Bergemann, Andreas Gursky, Beat Streuli, Thomas Struth, Miroslav Tichy, Joel Peter Witkin and others.
