Tracey Moffatt is arguably Australia’s most successful contemporary artist. Countless articles and catalogues and several books have been written about her work, and she has exhibited widely internationally. This exhibition represents the most comprehensive exhibition to be staged in Australia of her work. Moffatt’s practice incorporates photography, short films, documentaries and music videos. Her photographic works are usually created in series, almost like film stills, that can be seen as an open-ended narrative rather than as single images. They are usually highly stylised, with numerous references to art and photographic history. Her thematic concerns frequently address her personal history, comprising subjects such as race, gender, sexuality, and identity. Moffatt draws additional inspiration from the popular films and television series she grew up with in the 1960s and 1970s, which help inform her views of media stereotypes, the representation of women, and the dualistic nature of violence as both an energising and destructive power.
