DAIDO MORIYAMA
JOURNEY FOR SOMETHING
Considered one of the leading figures of contemporary Japanese photography, Daido Moriyama witnessed the dramatic changes that Japan went through in the decades following WWII. This made such an impact on Moriyama that it would become one of the core subjects of his work. Especially the visual and existential turmoil that accompanied this change, and that can still be felt in his gritty photographs of Japanese streets in which the old and the new compete for a place in society. Moriyama is fascinated by the paradox of a culture where age-old tradition stands side by side with contemporary practice.

On Saturday May 19th Reflex Amsterdam will open a new exhibition of Moriyama’s work titled Journey for Something, the exhibition will run until July 28th. It will include both iconic and new works by the photographer, and will be a great opportunity to see his latest work prior to a major show by William Klein/Daido Moriyama at Tate Modern, later this year.
Some of the titles included in the Reflex Amsterdam exhibition are: “The City I Always Had a Hard Time Leaving”, “KANGEROU (Mayfly)”, “Osaka”, “Kyoku/Erotica”, “Tights”, “Tokyo”, “Another Country in New York”, “Record No, 15” and “Hawaii”. This is the third time Moriyama will be exhibiting his work at Reflex Amsterdam, and we are very excited about this new exhibition!

In accompaniment of the exhibition a new 250-page book has been published by the gallery, which features essays by Matthias Harder of the Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin and Erik Kessels of KesselsKramer, Amsterdam.
Daido Moriyama will be present at the exhibition opening to sign some of the copies.
