The so what gallery in Duesseldorf, with focus on photography, started its first exhibition already one year ago. This was followed by three more exhibitions featuring eight artists. All of them are going to show a selection of current and new work at the collective exhibition „birthday_session.01“ to celebrate the very first birthday of so what.

Peyman Azhari was born in Iran in 1984. During the last year of the Persian Gulf War, he and his family fled the country and settled in Giessen, Germany. He pursued a semester exchange at Florida Atlantic University and at Stern School of Business at New York University during his studies International Business bachelors program and Business Administration master program at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. He is a autodidact photographer and travelled und photographed in Australia, Europe, Canada and in the USA. His artworks to ‚1440 Minutes in New York City’ focus on the daily lives of New Yorker. Nothing arranged or posed, the artworks nearly seem documentary and show life in New York in a new way, how it is never seen before. The artworks are collected in the book ‚1440 Minutes in New York City’.

Ralf Brueck has studied with Bernd Becher and conducted his diploma with Thomas Ruff at the Academy of Arts Duesseldorf. Since 2004 the Duesseldorf based artist has received several awards (Villa Romana Grant). His works were shown in numerous exhibitions in USA, China, Finland and Italy.
The term Distortion means deformation or a shift of structures created by powerful impact. Brueck’s image exists upon multiple planes and layers, each adding a different dimension to the image, as if the photographer is exposing or revealing the very DNA thread of the photographic image. This procedure is done deliberately by the artist to destroy the documentary dimension of the picture. Ralf Brueck invites the viewer to embark a new interpretation of the figurative content like landscapes, buildings or places. A new dimension is added, that changes the reality of the pictures by creating a new one. New scenarios, visual abnormalities or transformations reminiscent of a barcode. The inserted structures flow like ghostly visions above the image and generate an almost paranormal atmosphere.

1966 born in Barstow, California, a few blocks from Route 66. Paul Hadley grew up in California, Utah and in Hawaii. Today he lives in Pioneertown, CA and in Salt Lake City, UT. Paul Hadley remembers driving with his family all over the American Southwest as a child - riding in the backseat of the station wagon – his father playing Johnny Cash on his 8-track player in the car – setting the mood for the country western landscapes and the long lonely highways linking them together. At the age of twenty he goes his own way. He threw darts at a map to randomly pick places to drive to. Long days of driving open up the possibilities of random routes. And motifs for his ‚Road Trip Collection’. That perfect haphazard assemblage, that special ray of sun, the fluffiest cloud, the saddest tree. He never stopped, he shooted while driving. Roadsigns become paintings, police cars become toys – everything became simple.

The photographer Vanessa Leissring was born in Braunschweig in 1979. Vanessa Leissring works as a freelance photo designer and artist in Dortmund and Düsseldorf. She studied art history and photo design at FH Dortmund. The series shown in the exhibition were awarded with the Epson Foto Award in 2007/08. The series 'Petrol Stations' is an ongoing project. The petrol station - situated on the edge of urban civilization - is an integral part of our daily locomotion. Placed next to the American Highway and the European Autobahn, it represents a materialized belief in progress through technology - the petrol station is a media-mythical charged location. They are focal points of supply: that is what furnishes them with meaning as a part of an utilization mechanism - a mechanism which is initiated by man and comes to an end in technical progress. In the works of her series 'Petrol Stations' Vanessa Leissring takes the petrol stations out of their original context to isolate them in documental self-luminous photographs.

Manfred Rave was born and raised in Cologne and studied communication design with a major in photographic design at the University of Essen (the former Folkwangschule). While still a student he opened his own studio for advertising photography. He later held a teaching post in the photography department at his alma mater in Essen. Manfred Rave is a member of the German Association of Freelance Photographers (BFF). ‚The Abstract Truth’, as the name suggests, the main focus here is not on figurative representation but on an abstract visual language. Elements of photographic composition are employed to create distinct moods and to give images an “emotional charge”. The targeted use of expressive means specific to the media gives rise to something new and independent that goes beyond visual perception. The use of color and light plays a decisive role here and the diptych format further enhances the effect. The figurative aspect, however, serves solely as an associative stimulus. No conclusive interpretation of the images is offered; the viewer is challenged to actively engage. The various different “meanings” that result reflects the borad diversity among individuals.
In short, the pictures are zeitgeist yet open for constant transformation.

The series ‚worldrecords’ by photographer Kai Schäfer show some of the best records in music history, photographed on the most beautiful record players.
Honest and pure, technically perfected to the smallest details. The photographer developed a special light for the photos. You can nearly hear the rills in the vinyl. The Photographs play with the viewer’s individual memories, making it very personal.
Everyone remembers a special time or a certain situation when thinking of his favorite record. Whether the first kiss or the last day of school. The first love or the much bigger lovesickness.

Vor einem Jahr startete die auf Fotografie spezialisierte so what gallery in Düsseldorf mit einer ersten Ausstellung. Es folgten drei weitere Ausstellungen mit insgesamt acht Künstlern. Zum ersten Geburtstag werden die acht Künstler in der Sammelausstellung „birthday_session.01“ eine Auswahl alter und neuer Arbeiten zeigen.

Peyman Azhari wurde 1984 in Teheran geboren und flüchtete während des ersten Golfkrieges 1987 mit seiner Familie nach Deutschland. Während seines Studiums des International Business an der Fachhochschule Köln und seines Master in Business Administration an der Universität zu Köln verbrachte er ein Semester an der Florida Atlantic University, und an der Stern Business School, New York. Er ist als Fotograf Autodidakt und reiste und fotografierte in Australien, Europa, Kanada und in den USA. Die Arbeiten zu „1440 Minutes in New York City“ zeigen einen typischen Tag im Leben der New Yorker. Nichts ist gestellt oder arrangiert, fast dokumentarisch muten die Bilder an und zeigen das Leben in New York auf eine ungewöhnliche und ungesehene Art und Weise. Die Arbeiten sind außerdem in einem Fotoband vereint.

Ralf Brueck, der bei den Professoren Bernd Becher und Thomas Ruff, dessen Meisterschüler er war, an der Kunstakademie studierte und zu den jüngeren Vertretern der Düsseldorfer Fotoschule zählt, stellt Arbeiten aus der Serie „Distortion“ aus. Nachdem sich seine früheren Arbeiten mit der Verbindung der Düsseldorfer Fotoschule und der amerikanischen New Color Photography beschäftigten, befasst Ralf Brueck sich seit 2009 mit digitalen Bildeingriffen. Die seit 2011 in seinem Hauptwerk mehr und mehr auftretenden radikalen Eingriffe gehören in die Serie „Distortion“.

In Barstow, California, direkt um die Ecke der berühmten Route 66, wurde Paul Hadley 1966 geboren. In California, Utah und Hawaii wuchs er auf. Heute lebt Paul Hadley in Pioneertown, California und in Salt Lake City, Utah. Paul Hadley erinnert sich, wie er als Kind mit seiner Familie durch den amerikanischen Südwesten fährt. Reiten im Rücksitz eines Kombiwagens. Sein Vater, der Johnny Cash im Auto spielte. Genau die richtige Stimmung für die westlichen Landschaften des Landes und die langen einsamen Landstraßen. Mit 20 Jahren geht Paul seine eigenen Wege. Er wirft Dart-Pfeile auf eine Karte, um Plätze nach dem Zufall auszuwählen. Lange Tage des Fahrens ergeben so vollkommen zufällige Routen. Und Motive für seine „Road Trip Collection“. Dieser spezielle Strahl der Sonne, die flaumigste Wolke, der traurigste Baum. Er stoppt nie, er fotografiert beim Fahren. Strassenschilder werden Anstriche, Polizeiwagen werden Spielwaren - alles wird einfach geformt.

Mit den in der Ausstellung gezeigten Arbeiten gewann sie 2007/08 den Epson Foto Award. Ihre Arbeit ‚Petrol Stations‘ ist ein fortlaufendes Projekt. Die Tankstelle am Rand von urbaner Zivilisation ist Teil eines Alltags der Fortbewegung. An amerikanischen Highways und europäischen Autobahnen ist sie Teil eines materialisierten Glaubens an Fortschritt durch Technik - ein medial-mythisch aufgeladener Ort. In den Arbeiten ihrer Reihe ‚Petrol Stations‘ entfernt Vanessa Leissring Tankstellen aus ihrem Gebrauchskontext und isoliert sie in dokumentarisch anmutenden, selbstleuchtenden Fotografien. Sie sind Anlaufstellen als Orte der Versorgung: daher bekommen Tankstellen ihren Zweck als Teil einer Verwertungskette, an dessen Anfang und Ende Mensch und technische Entwicklungen stehen.

Manfred Rave, in Köln geboren und aufgewachsen, studierte Kommunikationsdesign, mit Schwerpunkt Foto-Design an der Universität Essen, der ehemaligen Folkwangschule. Bereits während des Studiums machte er sich mit einem eigenen Studio für Werbefotografie selbstständig. Später übte er eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Universität Essen im Fachbereich Fotografie aus. Manfred Rave gehört dem BFF, Bund freischaffender Foto-Designer an. Bei den Arbeiten der Serie „The Abstract Truth“ geht es ihm im Gegensatz zu einer primär gegenständlichen Darstellung um eine abstrakte Bildsprache. Mithilfe fotografischer Gestaltungsmittel werden bestimmte Stimmungen erzeugt und Bilder emotional aufgeladen. Durch den gezielten Einsatz medienspezifischer Mittel entsteht über das visuell Wahrnehmbare hinaus etwas eigenständig Neues. Farbgestaltung und Lichtführung spielen eine besondere Rolle. Gegenständlichkeit dient hier lediglich als Projektionsfläche für Assoziationen. Es wird keine verbindliche Deutung der Bilder vorgegeben, sondern der Betrachter ist aufgefordert, sich selbst einzubringen. Die daraus resultierenden unterschiedlichen Deutungen spiegeln die Vielfältigkeit der einzelnen Individuen wider. Die Bilder sind demnach Zeitgeist und offen für einen ständigen Wandel.

Die Serie „worldrecords“ des Fotografen Kai Schäfer zeigt die großartigsten Plattenalben der Musikgeschichte, fotografiert auf den schönsten Plattenspielern. Ehrlich und pur, technisch bis ins kleinste Detail ausgefeilt. Für die Aufnahmen entwickelte der Fotograf ein spezielles Licht. Die Rillen im Vinyl sind fast zu hören. Die Bilder spielen mit den Erinnerungen des Betrachters, ganz persönlich, ganz individuell. Jeder denkt bei seiner Lieblingsplatte an eine gewisse Zeit und an bestimmte Situationen. Sei es der erste Kuss oder der letzte Schultag. Sei es die erste grosse Liebe oder der noch viel größere erste Liebeskummer.
