AGENT PROVOCATEUR - A Happening with Natascha Stellmach

For the first time in Berlin at WAGNER + PARTNER and Kassel at DOCUMENTA 13, artist Natascha Stellmach will host Agent Provocateur, a project inviting visitors to engage in a personal pen tattoo experience. This work builds on the scandal around her major project with the ashes of Kurt Cobain and critiques the role of contemporary art in society.

Agent Provocateur premiered in Miami at PULSE Contemporary Art Fair, 2011 and in Melbourne at Anna Pappas Gallery, 2012. Visitors are invited to choose one of the notorious responses to Stellmach's project, debating "art", to be tattooed temporarily onto their skin by the artist. Agent provocateurs were traditionally "secret agents" employed to lure suspects into committing a crime with evidence. In this context the visitor is transformed into an Agent Provocateur for a night, questioning the merits, ethics and parameters of contemporary art. The tattoos become both a fashion accessory - with Stellmach tattooing to complement "the evening's antics and outfit" - as well as a 'rebrand' of the author's initial, often highly charged sentiment: ultimately endorsing Stellmach's project and role as an artist. In Miami and Melbourne, people of all ages queued to have their own temporary text-based tattoo, lasting between one to three days.

Erstmals in Berlin veranstaltet die Künstlerin Natascha Stellmach ihr Happening Agent Provocateur in der Galerie WAGNER + PARTNER. Dieses Projekt ermöglicht den Besuchern sich auf ein persönliches Experiment mit temporären Tattoos (pen tattoo) einzulassen.
Diese sind eine Weiterführung des künstlerischen Werkes Stellmachs, welche auf ihrem skandalträchtigen Projekt über die Asche von Kurt Cobain beruhen und die darauf folgenden Internetkommentare aus aller Welt verarbeitet. Im Mittelpunkt des Happeninngs stehen die Statements, die sich mit die Rolle der Kunst in der heutigen Gesellschaft beschäftigen. Was ist Kunst heute? Jeder Besucher ist eingeladen sich einen der Kommentare auszusuchen und sich diesen als temporäres Tattoo von der Künstlerin auf die Haut schreiben zu lassen. Er wird damit in die Rolle eines Agent Provocateur für eine Nacht versetzt, um Fragen nach Werten, Ethik und die Parameter von zeitgenössischer Kunst lebendig werden zu lassen.
Agent Provocateur hatte seine Premiere in Miami auf der Kunstmesse PULSE, 2011, wurde in der Anna Pappas Gallery in Melbourne veranstaltet und wird fortgesetzt am 3. August 2012 auf der Documenta in Kassel.
Am Abend bei WAGNER + PARTNER wird nicht nur im lockeren Rahmen tätowiert, sondern auch eine Dokumentation der bisherigen Agent Provocateur gezeigt.
