Festival Images, Vevey, Switzerland, 08-30 September 2012
The visual arts Festival Images is the first open-air photography festival of Switzerland. Every two years, it produces unseen monumental photography exhibitions in the streets of Vevey and also proposes numerous exhibitions in various regional institutions dedicated to the image. The Festival is also an opportunity to introduce the winning projects of the two competitions it organises: the Vevey International Photo Award and the European First Film Award.
Entirely free, the Festival Images is a true open-air museum and a quality platform for Swiss and international artists. For its 2012 edition, it offers more than 60 exhibition and events.
1/ OUTDOOR
Images on every street corner!
Through a series of monumental, made-to-measure photographic installations displayed on building facades and on the street, Festival Images sets up shop every two years in Vevey’s public areas and transforms the city into a genuine open-air museum.
Theme for 2012: “A change of decor”
In 2012, the artists whose work is to be displayed outside all have one thing in common: a certain use of decor in photographs by playing with the foreground and background of the image i.e. between the subject of the photo and what is behind it. This common theme also reflects the Festival’s ethos: to surprise the public by exhibiting in unusual places while building previously unseen displays, thus reinventing the city.
In September, Vevey will change its decor and become a giant photo studio!

The “Ex-EPA” building - 5 000 m2 of temporary museum space

Numerous collaborations
When it comes to pictures, the Festival collaborates with several institutions belonging to the city of Vevey such as the Swiss camera museum, Historical museum, Jenisch Museum, the CEPV photography school and l’Espace Quai1 among others.

3/ INTERNATIONAL PHOTO AND FILM AWARD
Vevey 8th International photography award, 2011-2012 www.images.ch/2012/en/concours/
Every two years the Vevey City of Images Foundation assists artists by awarding them with bursaries totalling 100,000 CHF (approximately 80,000 €) in the areas of photography and cinema. Vevey’s International Grand Prize for Photography each time attracts more than 1000 candidates from the world over and the works created thanks to these bursaries are then displayed during Festival Images.

6th European First Film Award, 2011-2012 www.images.ch/2012/en/concours/
This competition is open to film-makers who graduated from a European school in the last three years and is based on the assessment of their showreel. The chosen laureates each receive a sum of 10,000 € to launch their project. The idea behind this prize is for young film-makers to get an initial helping hand to fund their project plus a basis from which to look for further funding. The chosen projects must have been (totally or partly) created during that year if they are to be presented the following year at Festival Images.

Quai1 http://www.quai1.ch/
The Quai1 gallery is the result of a close collaboration between the Culture departement of Vevey and the Festival Images. This exhibition space enables to build links between its two biennial events: The Festival Images (even years) and the International Photo Award (odd years).
It offers five exhibition per year, all selected from the vast repertoire of the International Photo Award, one of the most important photography competition in Europe, involving hundreds of talented photographers. This exhibition space was opened in January 2010 in order to show this extremely rich visual heritage and make it accessible to everyone.
4/ PARALLEL EVENTS
Alongside all the exhibitions listed on the programme, the Festival also puts on other parallel events so as to become as much as possible a part of the city. These are hosted by the other main players in Vevey’s art scene such as galleries, museums, workshops, businesses and artist collectives, all of whom ensure Vevey remains a “City of Images”.
