The journey of pleasures
In 376 pages and 335 illustrations, including unique documents from the Archives of the Prefecture of Police, Nicole Canet presents to you the myriad facets of male prostitution in Paris, from 1860 to 1960, revealing a sulphuric and sensual underground world that up until now has remained largely unknown.
Through an iconography as abundant as it is rare, you will discover the different locales of these masculine pleasures: from the Hotel Marigny to the brothel of Saïd, from bars to formal balls, from parks to public urinals, through the torrid atmosphere of steam baths. You will occasionally encounter sailors and soldiers, as well as kept 'boys of pleasure' and their pimps. Nothing will be hidden of these gentlemen's intimate sex games, living tableaux of sadomasochism, and to top it off, you will be made to enter the secret chamber of a male brothel.
At a street corner or in the privacy of a bedroom, it will seem that you are crossing the shadows of Marcel Proust or Jean Genet, of Roland Barthes or Pier Paolo Pasolini.
