With "Everyday Indexes" Galerie f5,6 is happy to present new work of american artist Jonathan Gitelson (*1975). It is the second show with Gitelsons work after the group show "Chicagraphy" in 2007 at Galerie f5,6, Munich.

"We live by stories. It’s the principle by which we organize our experience and thus derive our sense of who we are. We’re in an unceasing flow of time and events and people, and to make sense of what goes past, we put a beginning and an end to a certain thing, and we leave things out and we heighten other things, and in that way we break the unbroken flow into stories, because that’s the only way we can give it significance." (Tobias Wolff, The Art of Fiction No. 183)

The work of Jonathan Gitelson is not about the great stories of our time, or so it seems at first glance. His theme is the everyday, overheard conversations and found objects. It is about seemingly mundane experiences. But maybe it is wrong to think of these things as small, always comparing them to something big, either globally or possibly just around the corner. Maybe it is time to get smart. We already do operate on certain indexes – we see smoke and think fire; people waiting at the bus stop means we are just in time – why do we not learn to cherish the signs of the every day more than we do? In the series „Items of Clothing secretly hidden by my girlfriend (so i wouldn’t wear them anymore)“ Gitelson stages items of his wardrobe that have slowly been edited out of his closet by his girlfriend without his knowing and prints them to scale. The result is not a story about a pair of socks or a worn out sweater, but rather a funny but elegant monument to a modern, committed relationship of two people who are making it work. Another modern-day man experience is Gitelsons „A Man in Nature“, who finds himself correcting the natural world as he walks in it, attempting to achieve the fictional reality of crafted images, whereas „The last snow in Brattleboro“ documents the return of spring by charting the demise of even the last pile of snow in the city of Brattleboro, Vermont. While one protagonist is stuck between what we might get tricked into believing is reality, the other is straightforwardly facing it. Aren’t these everyday indexes the signs and stories of what every one of us is really part of?

Gitelsons work combines photography, graphic and handwritten elements sometimes arranged in panels reminiscent of graphic novels. Pairing his minimal, dead-pan aesthetic with an everpresent underlying humerous wit his work is a wonderful combination of objectivity and unique style.

Mit "Everyday Indexes" freut sich die Galerie f5,6 neue Arbeiten des amerikanischen Künstlers Jonathan Gitelson (*1975) zu präsentieren. Es ist die zweite Ausstellung mit Arbeiten Gitelsons nach der Gruppensausstellung "Chicagraphy" im Jahr 2007 in der Galerie f5,6.

Jonathan Gitelsons Arbeiten kreisen nicht um die großen Themen unserer Zeit, so zumindest scheint es auf den ersten Blick. Sein Thema ist die Alltäglichkeit, zufällig überhörte Gespräche und gefundene Gegenstände. Es scheint um banale Erscheinungen zu gehen. Aber vielleicht ist diese Einschätzung falsch und es wird diesen kleinen Dingen unrecht getan, indem man sie dem ständigen Vergleich zu thematisch großen Ereignissen, ob global oder privat, aussetzt. Vielleicht wird es Zeit unseren Blick zu korrigieren. Es gibt Zeichen, die man schnell verstanden hat– wir sehen Rauch aufsteigen und befürchten Feuer, Mitmenschen an einer Haltestelle signalisieren uns den Bus noch nicht verpasst zu haben – warum also nicht mehr dieser Indizes schätzen lernen?

Die Serie "Atems of Clothing secretly hidden by my Girlfriend (so i wouldn’t wear them anymore)" besteht aus aufmerksam inszenierten und 1:1 groß abgezogenen Fotografien, die Kleidungsstücke Gitelsons zeigen, die seine Freundin ohne sein Wissen aussortiert und vor ihm versteckt hat. Das Ergebnis ist keine Geschichte über den Verlust von Socken oder T-Shirts, sondern eine eher elegante und modernen Lösung, einer Beziehung zweier sich bemühenden Menschen ein Monument zu errichten. Die moderne Welt versucht sich auch der Protagonist der Serie „A Man in Nature“ zu erschließen, durch natürliche Landschaften wandernd passt er sein direktes Umfeld der fiktionalen Realität gemachter Abbilder an, in „The last snow in Brattleboro“ hingegen wird der tatsächlichen Umwelt auf den Fersen der Rückkehr des Frühlings mit dem Ableben des letzen Schneehaufens in Brattleboro nachgespürt. Während der Eine in einer digital geprägten Vorhölle gefangen scheint, stellt sich der Andere der blanken Realität – und sind es nicht gerade diese alltäglichen Zeichen denen wir wirklich ausgesetzt sind?

Die Arbeiten von Jonathan Gitelson kombinieren Fotografie, grafische und handschriftliche Elemente die sich oftmals an Erzählrahmen von Graphic Novels orientieren. Sein minimalistischer Stil gepaart mit trockenem Humor und ständig präsentem Scharfsinn ist eine wunderbare und eigenständige Kombination von Objektivität und Stil.
