Bloomsbury Auctions is delighted to announce its November 23rd Photographs and Photobooks sale. The auction encompasses a range of photographs dating from the 19th century to the present day.
Highlights from the early part of the sale include two albumen prints by Julia Margaret Cameron taken at the suggestion of Alfred, Lord Tennyson to illustrate his book Idylls of the King and five platinum print landscapes by Peter Henry Emerson, known to many as the father of art photography.


The sale incorporates a strong selection of 20th century photography including the French masters: Robert Doisneau's La Dame Indignée (£2,000 - 3,000), Willy Ronis' famous Le Nu Provençal, (£2,500 - 3,500), a stunning portrait of surrealists Leonor Fini and André Pieyre de Mandiargues by Henri Cartier-Bresson (£4,000 - 6,000) and an early print of Edouard Boubat's portrait of his first wife and muse Lella (£10,000 - 15,000).

One of the star lots in the sale must be the collection of 50 collotype prints from Eadweard Muybridge's celebrated portfolio Animal Locomotion (£15,000 - 20,000).

Other classic vintage photographs from the last century include a vintage solarised portrait by Man Ray of a mysterious 'Jane' (£1,800 - 2,200) and Erwin Blumenfeld's famous shot of Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn for the issue of Paris Vogue celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower (£8,000 - 12,000).
British photography is well represented in the catalogue with works by Cecil Beaton, Chris Killip, Raymond Moore, Bill Brandt, Tony Ray Jones, John Blakemore, John Davies, David Bailey, Terry O'Neill and Simon Norfolk.
Old and new iconic fashion images make an appearance with prints by David Ross from Kate Moss' first professional photo shoot (£800 -1,200) alongside photographic legends such as Horst P Horst's Mainbocher Corset (£2000 - 3000) and Jeanloup Sieff's Corset, New York (£8,000 - 12,000).


Also included in the sale are many celebrity portraits including photgraphs of Marilyn Monroe by Bert Stern, Elliott Erwitt and Leif Eric Nygards, as well as Terry O'Neill images of Jerry Hall, Brigitte Bardot and Sean Connery, Fay Dunaway and Jean Shrimpton. Other well-known images include the five unused frames from the Ian Macmillan's iconic Beatles Abbey Road cover (£5,000 -7,000), and Steve McCurry's National Georgaphic famous cover Afghan Girl (£3,000 - 4,000).

The auction ends with a varied selection of photobooks including Helmut Newton's iconic and oversized book Sumo, three of Ed Ruscha's early books and a collection of rare Japanese photobooks which includes a signed copy of Daido Moriyama's Bye Bye Photography.
Other photographers featured in the auction include William Eggleston, Sebastiao Salgado, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Margaret Bourke-White, Richard Avedon, Mario Giacomelli, Lee Miller, Lisette Model and Irving Penn.
