Faces evolved from Philip Trager’s extensive work photographing dancers and builds on his successful 1992 book Dancers. He has collaborated with a variety of dancers and performance artists, including Kazuo Ohno, Amanda Miller of the Frankfurt Ballet, Mark Morris, Eiko and Koma and dancers of the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perrault. Trager’s intensive approach allows him to develop a personal relationship with his subjects that is clearly expressed throughout this new work. The photographs in Faces — isolated from dance movement — present an innovative kind of portraiture. Creating a kind of psychological theatre, these startling and mysterious images are intensely emotional, provocative, and stunningly beautiful. Trager’s photographs compel us to rethink the field of dance photography.

This monograph presents a complete overview of the photographs of Philip Trager, one of the most important photographers of architecture and dance of the twentieth century. It chronicles work from his books and unpublished photographs from a wide range of projects. Trager’s books are highly regarded as modern albums which capture the spirit of their subject matter in luminous and compelling photographs of architecture and dance.
Trager’s distinctly personal photographs of buildings are regarded as landmarks in architectural photography and have become standard documents for architectural and art historians, as well as architects. His expressionistic photographs of dancers in outdoor settings capture the essence of the work of many of the best contemporary choreographers and dancers, causing the viewer to rethink the field of dance photography.
The book includes essays; an extensive interview with Trager; photographs illustrating his life in photography; an illustrated section of selected projects and commissions; and a chronology and bibliography.

L'AD-Galerie présente des images consacrées à l’architecture et à la danse du photographe Philip Trager à partir du vendredi 21 septembre 2012 (vernissage de 17 à 20h)
L’exposition « Dance & Cities » rassemble une quinzaine de photographies de Philip Trager. Elle présente les deux facettes du travail de ce photographe américain, né en 1935 dans le Connecticut.

Les thèmes de la danse et de l’architecture sont intimement liés au nom de Trager. En effet, par son travail sur la danse contemporaine et les performances artistiques, Philip Trager a largement initié le travail photographique sur la danse. Il y revisite le genre du portrait avec des images saisissantes et mystérieuses, permettant de saisir toute l’expressivité de la danse contemporaine. Ses portfolios sur l’architecture figurent également parmi les classiques de la photographie d’architecture tant il a su véritablement matérialiser les concepts d’espace et de lumière. Son travail est d’ailleurs devenu une référence bibliographique pour les architectes et historiens d’art et d’architecture.

Le travail du photographe a été publié dans plusieurs livres édités par Steidl parmi lesquels on peut citer sa rétrospective « Philip Trager » et « faces ». Ses publications ont été saluées à de très nombreuses reprises. Ainsi, quatre de ses livres ont été sélectionnés par le New York Times Annual Book Review. The Times (London), Vanity Fair, New York Magazines ont également souligné la qualité de son travail.

Ses photographies sont présentes dans de nombres collections publiques telles que la Bibliothèque nationale, le Centre canadien d’architecture, le « Center for creative Photography », la « Corcoran Gallery of Art » ou encore le « Metropolitan Museum of Art ». En outre, la libraire du Congrès américain a acquis la collection complète de ses photographies publiées et non publiées ainsi que de ses archives.

A partir du 12 octobre, une vingtaine d’images du photographe font également l’objet d’une exposition à Bibliothèque publique de New-York.
