Sunburned
Chris McCaw's exhibition of his Sunburned work at Duncan Miller Gallery has been extended through November 24, 2012. This is the gallery's third exhibition of McCaw's work since 2008.
McCaw has created an innovative photographic process where he exposes vintage photo paper to the sun over long time frames with massive hand-built cameras. The result is a landscape image that is actually physically seared by the sun. This groundbreaking work creates unique paper negatives images that push photography into the realm of sculpture. As each work is a negative, they are unique and cannot be reproduced.
According to a recent Los Angeles Times review "The pictures pay homage to photography's essential nature as a record written by light, and they chronicle, with profound beauty and elemental simplicity, what it means to occupy a specific place on earth at a specific time." Among the public institutions that have collected these works are Los Angeles County Museum of Art, New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
