Senegal, January 2011: At the same time as the upheavals in the Arab world, a group of activists, artists, musicians, and journalists attacked the erosion of democracy with the cry “Y’en a marre!” (Enough is enough!). This led to a series of public protest against the president’s candidature for a third term in office, which is considered illegal in Senegal that has been democratic since the 1980s.

At the end of these events which finished with the first election round 13 months later in February 2012, the curator Koyo Kouoh and her comrades-in-arms at the Raw Material Company gathered together the images of the events in Senegal. Pictures from 19 photographers and photojournalists arranged in nine exhibition sections bear witness to Senegal’s civil society in the process of selfemancipation – from the beginning of the „Y’en a marre“ protest movement in January 2011 to the elections 13 months later. The exhibition also focuses on the important role of photographers in the dissemination of news.

In a two-day programme of discourse, international representatives from civil society, the arts and social sciences raise questions concerning the localisation of the protests from a Pan African perspective, the forms of political and social dynamics in the “Senegalese Spring” and the visual language of a revolt.

A comprehensive catalogue of Chronicle of a Revolt with numerous images and texts by Alioune Tine, Alpha Amadou Sy, Boubacar Boris Diop, Camille Ostermann, Fadel Barro, Dr. Ibrahima Wane, Prof. Ismaila Madior Fall, Issa Samb, Koyo Kouoh, Mame Aly Konté, Mactar Fall and Penda Mbow will be published by Raw Material Company and Haus der Kulturen der Welt for EUR 24,-. The catalogue is edited in English and French and is accompanied by a resumé in German.

Senegal im Januar 2011: Zeitgleich zu den Umbrüchen in der arabischen Welt prangerte eine Gruppe von Aktivisten, Künstlern, Musikern und Journalisten mit dem Ruf "Y’en a Mahre!" (Es reicht!) die Aushöhlung der Demokratie an. Es entstand eine beispiellose, mehr als ein Jahr andauernde Serie von Protestaktionen gegen die allgemein als illegal angesehene dritte Kandidatur des amtierenden Präsidenten des Landes, das seit den 1980er Jahren über eine demokratische Tradition verfügt.

Am Ende dieser Protestsaison, die mit der ersten Wahlrunde dreizehn Monate später im Februar 2012 endete, führten die Kuratorin der Ausstellung Koyo Kouoh und ihre Mitstreiter von der Raw Material Company die Bilder der Geschehnisse im Senegal zusammen: Aufnahmen von 19 Fotografen und Fotojournalisten geben in neun Ausstellungskapiteln Zeugnis von der sich emanzipierenden Zivilgesellschaft im Senegal – vom Beginn der Protestbewegung „Y’en a marre“ im Januar 2011 bis zu den Wahlen 13 Monate später. Die Ausstellung rückt dabei auch das Engagement der Fotografen und ihre bedeutsame Rolle bei der Verbreitung von Nachrichten in den Fokus.

In einem zweitägigen Diskursprogramm werfen internationale Vertreter aus Zivilgesellschaft, Kunst und Wissenschaft Fragen auf nach der Verortung der Proteste aus panafrikanischer Sicht, den Formen politischer und gesellschaftlicher Dynamiken im „senegalesischen Frühling“ und den Bildsprachen einer Revolte.
