The large-scale photography exhibition Humanism in China - A Contemporary Record of Photography will open at the Guangdong Museum of Art on December 12th, 2003 in Guangzhou, China. In planning this exhibition for more than half a year, the museum has collected over six hundred works from more than two hundred and seventy photographers who come from more than twenty provinces, cities and municipalities all over China. All the work in the exhibition was created between 1950 and 2003, spanning over fifty years. Although fifty years is only a short period in the vast history of China, these years demonstrate great changes in the history of China and in the lives of Chinese people. During this time, Chinese people have gained a greater sense of individual self-worth while fighting for freedom and humanity as well as advancing the development of their economy. Especially during the twenty-five years from 1978 to the present, Chinese people have gradually changed from existing as a political collective to existing as individual and social people. The tremendous social changes that have continued to occur since that time have not only greatly affected the lives of Chinese people, but have also been reflected in the daily lives of those individuals. We are now living in an age where people, as groups or as individuals, have realized the value of human beings and take delight in the pursuit and expression of such value. This exhibition will attempt to document this evolution.
