Fotofestival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg is the biggest curated photo festival in Germany and has evolved into a highly regarded European biennale. Its exhibition venues are eight renowned art institutions in Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg. Each exhibiting location focuses on a partial aspect of the topic, on the concept of “home”, for example, or precisely its opposite: uprooting and exile. Through the unification of the different photographic approaches, not only the enormous topical diversity of the Magnum photographers will be apparent, but also their very different personal and formal manners of approach.
Two special projects assume a prominent position as a major component of the 5th Fotofestival and its topical questioning. For the in-situ project Insight Out / Konversion Magnum photographers Alessandra Sanguinetti and Donovan Wylie photographed the withdrawal of American soldiers from the Rhine-Neckar region. In doing so they documented the ongoing processes of “conversion” – the liberation of formerly militarily used land and the dissolution of territorial boundaries that is connected with this. In a second project, specially produced for the 5th Fotofestival under the title Deutschlandreise, the four Magnum photographers Olivia Arthur, Peter van Agtmael, Paolo Pellegrin and Moises Saman travel the length and breadth of Germany in general election year 2013. Their very personal views of the country will be presented in an exhibition of their own.
